This happens almost every time I’m on a support call. I tell the user to type in an address, such as www.showmypc.com and the next thing I know they’re reading back search results.
Google is not your ‘address bar’ people!

I’ve seen people do this a lot. The one that surprised me the most was when someone typed the url into the youtube search box.

Si4e, I actually read some stats recently that 70% of Internet users type URLs into search bars - so I believe you when you cite your own experience with end-users.
Sometimes I do it out of habit since I use the search bar a whole lot for my research - but only prolly 1/10 times.
From Google’s standpoint, the delicate placement of the search bar in the various browsers as well as the lack of an address bar in Chrome is meant to steer more people back to Google for searches.

ps. i never get that kind of msg when i put an address in the google bar. it simply states the website in the search results.

i have seen ppl who use google for everything… Rather then typing cricinfo.com they will type cricinfo on Google search bar and open desired page for search results.

i use google for converting units and spell checks and obviously for searches too.

nah, who wants to open ie to whatever homepage and then type in the address, this is way quicker.

If typing Urls into google search bar is not a correct thing then why google support it.For e.g if you do not know the correct URL of wahcantt homepage and u just type in the search bar wahcantt.net as the domain do not exist, Google will show you results of wahcantt.com, which is correct one. Typing URL into Google search bar is correct or incorrect thing to do,this is another argument, but the fact is Google support it…

That actually makes sense…except for a few, Google supports every URL and this is what the Search Engines are meant for…from a random query to exact URLs.

As long as you know what you’re doing, type the URL anywhere you’d like, but when you’re specifically told to type it in the address bar and you type it into google and then read back the search results, looking for guidance on which link to select, well then it’s annoying.

ya its true,i agree. But from your thread i got first impression that typing URL is not a correct thing. Anyway, When some one know the exact URL then he/she must type in the address bar, no need of googling it then…

Another funny thing is people typing google.com in the address bar before typing the url they want to go to in google.
