Stock market questions.

Hi, can the broker type guys here explain the stock market to me.

I know very briefly that stock in listed companies in traded, but beyond that i am lost.

When news anchors say:

The DOW is up 1.3% closing at 10012, what does that mean?

I understand the objective is to buy cheap and sell when shares are at a better price, pocketing the difference, but how do people know the flow?

How do people get into this line of work?

Whats “volume traded” refer too?

Thanks,

Leg

Re: Stock market questions.

lgb: "Index" is a sorta indication of overall market direction, if Index is down it shows more shares were traded at lower price than yesterday's value at COB. As for your million or should I say "billion" dollar question "how do people know the flow?", nobody does. Some people are good at guessing but no one knows for "sure" when to get out of a stock.

How do people get into this line of work? Do you mean how to start trading shares? If thats the case then you simply pick one brokerage firm and open an account with them and start your trading.

"Volume traded" means how many shares were "traded", or how many shares/stocks changed hands.

Re: Stock market questions.

What is COB?

How is it calculated?

Re: Stock market questions.

COB = close of business. Its not a figure

Re: Stock market questions.

Also, if you are interested in becoming a stock broker, then you will have to first pass a series-seven test...

Re: Stock market questions.

Explain?

Re: Stock market questions.

Can I shadow any stock brokers here (Uk based) for a little while. For free of course, as to gain experience.

PM me anyone who can help. :)

Re: Stock market questions.

shadow? :konfused: I have not seen any brokerage firm offer their services for “free” (at least in US), there are cheaper ones though but I’m not so sure about their quality of service.

Re: Stock market questions.

No, no...I mean I'll work for free. Assistant sort of, just for experience sake.
