Stippling on foundation

Sorry if there’s been a topic on this already!

I know that stippling is supposed to give an airbrushed finish but I honestly can’t get to grips with this technique!

I don’t wear foundation often but when I do I use my 190, I love this brush but I want to try out different application techniques. I have the 187 but I’m now using this to apply my blush as I’m finding stippling a tad difficult!

So, who here stipples on their foundation? Any tips and pointers you can give me? :bb:

Thanks!

Re: Stippling on foundation

I used to when I used Studio Fix Fluid.

The foundation you are using has to be quite liquidy.

What are you using?

The brush has to be REALLY good, shorter handles are better. The foundation has to be fluid and when and if I use it (for occassions) I stipple-on moisturizer using the same brush first and then continue with my foundation.

  • always use your concealer and set it with loose powder before stippling.

  • always use your finger-pads to do your eyes and nose.

  • always pat-in loose powder when your done.

I switch between Revlon's ColorStay liquid foundation and Maybelline's dream satin liquid foundation. So, they're both liquids... I've been thinking about trying out SFF but I heard it has a tendency to break people out. How did it work for you?

Thanks Gina, I'll try these out :)
So, what brush do you use? the 187 doesn't have a short handle. Also, after you stipple on your moisturiser do you let it sink in for a while or do you apply your foundation straight after?

I use 2 of them (different sizes) smaller one for smaller areas such as around the nose and under the eyes.. and the bigger one for the cheeks, chin etc. I got mine from Sephora. I let the moisturizer sink-in for 10 mins and then proceed.

Re: Stippling on foundation

There is actually a smaller version of the 187. I wouldn't recommend it for foundation though.

I was fine with SFF but it changes colour over time in the bottle and becomes darker and since I don't wear that much foundation, I'd have to get rid of it.

I agree with Gina that wait after moisturising for about 15mins. I don't stipple it though.

This is what I used to do. SFF comes in a bottle with a screw lid so I would turn it upside down before opening it. There would then be foundation on the lip of the bottle when you'd take the lid off. I would then take my 187 and dip it in the product just so there were little beads of foundation on the ends of the fibres. [you can put some foundation on the back of your hand and do it this way too]. Then, very quickly stipple it around one cheek and once you have covered the area start buffing in circular motions like crazy. Repeat for the rest of the face.

I'm not sure what those foundations are like the consistency has to be really low viscosity.

Another tip is to dampen the brush. I have both spray bottles of tea tree water and rose water on my dressing table. A spray or two of anything like (or just water) on the bristles before you begin should help spread the foundation around.

I think you need to look at the experts. Koren is a makeup artist with a channel on youtube. I am not crazy about his makeup style(in terms of colors), but his technique and tips are the best.
He has a number of videos on stippling.

  1. Stippling Tips

  2. How NOT to stipple:

  3. Stippling hard to stipple areas:

He has some other REALLY good videos on how to cover acne scars( and he has laot of those). I will start a separate thread and share those.

Re: Stippling on foundation

Lol.. well in the first vid he's saying the same as I said about getting the foundation on the tips only and putting the foundation on the back of the hand. And it looks like he's using SFF.

I agree with him about swirling if you are doing as much coverage as he is. My coverage is very light and in that case I would still prefer buffing but after stippling the entire area (the foundation is almost dry by then).

p.s SFF and 187 both came out in early 2006. I'm pretty sure I bought them together as I don't remember ever using anything else for SFF application. I used to use Studio Fix Powder and then saw Temptalia's comparison pics (she used SFpowder before too). Went out and bought it asap as there was a huge difference. All the other stippling brushes you can buy from consumer brands came out after the 187 was a hit.

I love Koren  He has some amazing makeup tips!
I’ve seen the second video before so I knew not to do a swirling action with the brush as you won’t get the ‘airbrushed’ look. But that first vid was very useful! Thanks, all of you! :hugz:
