Any views? Is there a type of cultural tussle between Northern and Southern India?

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

so there is a tussle? After going through different discussions here on GS, I think even religion is differently followed in South and North. :hmmm:

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

South India has stayed independent for most of their history. The areas which the Muslims and other invaders used to conquer were mostly located in the North and Center. Hence we can find cultural similarities in those areas.

Difference Between North and South India | Difference Between | North vs South India

When talking about the racial differences, the North Indians are termed as Aryans, and the South Indians as Dravidians. In physique as well, there are many differences between the people of the South and North. The North Indians are taller, and more strongly built than the South Indians. The South Indians are a bit darker than the North Indians.

A big difference can be seen in their dressing styles. Salwar Kamiz is the widely used dress by North Indian women. On the other hand, women in the South wear saris. While men in the North wear Salwar, the men in South prefer dhotis.

Another difference that can be seen between North and South India is their food. When compared to the North Indian food, the South Indian food is spicier. The South Indians use more tamarind and coconut when compared to North Indians. The North Indians use more milk products when compared to the people of South India.

When talking about the culture, there is vast difference between North and South India. One can come across differences in their music (Northern Hindustani and Southern Carnatic), dance forms and folks.

^ North Indians may consume some meat but South Indians are largely vegetarians. Their food is also different dhokla and things like that.

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

nahiiN jii…there is NO tussle…it’s just the way they and we are…in the 80’s we had Prime Ministers and Presidents from the South. if there is a tussle then it’s more like a friendly one…like the one we have one in Pakistan :cb:

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

nope actually south indians consume much more meat then northern part, infact almost all of them eat non-veg except maybe brahmins

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

extreme northern part of india might be lighter in colour same as extreme southern people might be darker in colou, but majority of them are brown skin with defferent facial structure
also i don’t think northern indians are taller then southern part from what i have seen this is comparing common man..

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

what about dhokla, idli/dosa and other vegetarian kind of cuisine of South India?

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

whats dhokla just done google search
i only had it once in my gujarati friends house where we had dinner,it's northern indian dish you won't find that in south india

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

Ok I thought its a South Indian dish.

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

Dhokla is gujrati dish. So, Gujarat is also considered as South India?

PS: I thought dhokla would be a sweet dish, but google shows a different pic

Most strict Brahmin belongs to North India? Aren't most sacred places of Hinduism in North India (it flourished in North India)? Right?

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

nah actually from what i have seen brahmins are more strict in southern part then northern neighbours, brahmins in south india are much more traditional we still use sanskrit in all of our rituals where as local language is used in north india also veg thing is not just for brahmins other castes like marwari, agarwals e.t.c don't eat meat in north india, where as every one eats atleast chicken in south india.also population of brahmins is higher in number in north india, south india consitutes just 25-30 percent of total indian population

coming to sacred places north india has the most sacred place of hinduism in kasi. but equally there are many sacred places in southern part tirupati where i come from is the richest temple in the world with vatican city coming second
also many of the temples in tamil nadu are of magnificent architecture which are built around BC

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

South Indian Hinduism is considered by many scholars as a "purer" form of Hinduism as was existing before much of North became a bigger cultural melting pot than the south. But I am not qualified enough to comment on that. Many North Indians are Lord Rama and Lord Krishna devotees whereas many South Indians follow Bhagwan Vishnu or Bhagwan Shiva. Still a piligrimage to Kashi in the North is not considered as complete by many without a piligrimage to Rameshwaram in the South. Basically the 4 Piligrimage places (Char Dham) considered Holy by most Hindus are Badrinath to the North, Dwaraka to the west, Puri to the east and Rameshwaram to the South. Basically you can find important piligrimage places all over. And, like Babloos mentioned, there is Tirupati and many temples built almost a millennia ago with wonderful architecture which are considered as heritage sites and still used in worship.

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

Well explained and clarify the misconception.

Re: Sterotyped Cultures in media

I thought South Indian prototype is mallu, never imagined its madras.
And my mallu colleagues say North Indians are corrupt and arrogant.
