Welcome to ** ‘Cafe Mumbai’ ** - the brand new album from Taz {real name tarsame singh} of Stereo Nation.
Two years in the making, the album signifies a journey spanning the globe with influences ranging from Bollywood Lollywood, Latino, Arabic, R&B, Jazz and dance giving the album which has 16 tracks a truly international feel.
The inspiration for Taz’s new album transpires in a cafe in Mumbai, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a city which is alive 24-hours a day.
Taz is currently in Mumbai recording two videos to accompany the album.
Some of my favourite tracks on this album include ‘Mitran Nu Margayee - Ride With Me’ which is a fusion of underground drum and bass from the British club scene fused with punjabi folk music. Sung in Punjabi and English, this song is about a group of friends fascinated by the beauty of a woman.
‘Apna Sangeet’ is another favourite. This is a hip hop meet bhangra track and is about racism.
The song gives out the message that any form of racism will not be tolerated and that people should stand proud about who they are and to “let their freedom of speech be their dictator.” This is a very powerful number.
On a more lighter note one of the songs is about a ‘Rickshaw’. This track describes the behaviour of a young rickshaw driver who has fallen in love with his ideal woman. He would go to the ends of the earth in his rickshaw to be with her.
The song ‘Habibi’ takes its influences from Arabic music.
This track combines heavy beats with Arabic orchestral flavours.
‘Habibi’ meaning ‘darling’ in Arabic, tells the story of a South Indian village girl who ‘teases but never pleases’.
All in all ‘Cafe Mumbai’ will appeal to a wider audience as each track is very different, some with more Punjabi and Bollywood influences with others more influenced by R&B and club music.
Taz has been having a worldwind of success since the millennium.
He released his last album ‘Slave II Fusion’ in december 2000 and achieved 120,000 sales in the UK (that’s more than Posh Spice has ever done) and 140,000 sales in India.
Since the success of this album Taz was approached by music makers in Bollywood to record a song for the film ‘Tum Bin’ which went onto become a hit in 2001.
After appearing in ‘Tum Bin’ he was then asked to perform at the Indian Oscars in Sun City South Africa.
He then released his hit single ‘Laila’ into the mainstream charts. The single hit the British charts at number 44.
The follow-up album to ‘Slave II Fusion’ entitled ‘Taz-mania’ was released last year and became a number one hit in the Asian charts and Taz was presented an award by the Guild of British Asians for the ‘Best Music Act 2002’.
