Breaking the rules, crossing the boundaries and improvising has been the driving force behind my inspiration.
Taz talking about his attitude
Tarsame Singh aka Taz, formerly known as Johnny Zee, is a British-born Asian raised in Coventry.
The original band comprised Coventry-bred Tarsame Singh Jarnail (Taz) and Kendall Smith, of Caribbean origin. Their story started right from the time when Taz was known as Johnny Zee, following closely in the footsteps of Michael Jackson.
He stormed the UK Asian pop charts in 1989 with his debut album Hit The Deck which was at number one for an amazing 36 weeks.
The album is still one of the biggest selling Asian fusion releases.
Since then, his sales have proved a Coventry background is far from being a disadvantage.
All but two of his nine albums to date have received gold, platinum or multi-platinum discs.
In addition, the highlights of his career include playing alongside Barry White in Kenya and touring in Pakistan.
Taz is an international heart-throb
One of the first artists to create cross-cultural music, Taz has been credited with influencing many young British Asian artists.
Taz named his band Stereo Nation in 1996, reflecting their diverse influence.
Taz seems to take variety seriously as he has a broad musical enthusiasm.
Among his influences he lists George Michael, Prince, Jam & Lewis, Baby Face, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, R D Burman, Gurdass Maan, Kuldip Manak and Zapp.
His music has been described as a mixture of Punjabi folk, Hindi and English fused with western pop, infectious melodies and dance grooves.
Taz has even recorded singing in English, Spanish and Swahili - all on just one song. His is an international sound that has achieved massive international success.
