States Regions Nations Continents - a question of patriotism

Why is a nation - a country - the biggest politial organization that people so totally identify themselves with? People of diverse regions, ethnicity, religion, languages, cultures are somehow drawn into this artificial political division to the extent that they will forsake all these charateristics as well as their lives, the well being of their own families…all to protect the mostly unnatural borders of a nation.

They don’t go to war if two states or provinces have a difference - whether it be borders, water or movement of people.

Why is it patriotic to foresake the interests of your street, village, town, state or region - so that you keep the best interests of the next unit called the nation? And why doesn’t the same logic extend to the next unit - the continet or the hemisphere?

How did patriotism come to be? How did it get defined as to the country - not below and not above?
