Statement of Objective ?

what do “Statement of Objective” means exactly for acadamicians when they are evaluating condidates for MS/Phd studies?.

I applied to one institute, they are asking for Statement of objectives.
I am confused what I should write in my statement of objective?

My studies at Graduate level are Engineering and the MS/Phd program is also aimed in the same area.

Re: Statement of Objective ?

"Statement of Objectives" means, "why the hell did you apply to THIS institution for THIS particular program?"

They evaluate whether you are aware of what you are getting into, why you are getting into it and what you want to get out of it ;)

Re: Statement of Objective ?

would this mean I should write one general artical about subjects of my interest I want to pursue further studies in .

Second thing , wether my this statement will becoming basis for my final theses or it is just for analysing my perlimanry approach towards my field of studies.

Re: Statement of Objective ?

Nothing to do with your final thesis. You write about WHY you want to do it. What do you want to get out of it. You don't go to a programme because you THINK it would be beneficial, but because you KNOW it aligns with you objectives in life.

Link the programme with your long term goals and how getting THAT degree from THAT school witll help you achieve them. They want to know if you know what you are getting into or just applied because someone told you to do so.

Re: Statement of Objective ?

I agree with most of what kakaballi has said. Additionally, there's no harm in asking someone who knows that school better about what is expected in the statement. You can always lookup profiles of grad students online and send a couple of emails to them to ask for some pointers. I did this when I was applying for grad studies, and many students are willing to help.

I would also say that although there's no hard and fast rule about the content of a personal statement, it does help to keep it personable - talk about experiences and background that lead you to consider the school and the program in question.

Also, it is strongly recommended that you talk to a couple of faculty members whom you might be interested in being supervised by. If you get a positive indication from someone, you might want to align your study interests with their areas of research in your statement. Obviously, you should look for someone who has similar interests to what you're planning to study.

There have been several other threads on statement of purpose / personal statements in this forum over the past years. May be you can get more pointers there. Best of luck.

Re: Statement of Objective ?

^ Thank you Kaka and LC for your sincere replies.
LC ,
Contacting some Faculty in a school I intend to pursue my studies with, prior to my admission there would be not seen as I am trying to get favour, that I donot deserve yet?
or such perception reflects my hesitation and fear ?
Your view please?
