Starting solids

So when and how did you do it?

I can’t wait! Bunny is 16 weeks today, mashAllah.

Re: Starting solids

I started when her ped gave the go (at 4 months) with single grain rice cereal prepared according to the directions on the pack (first time feeds are really runny). But be careful and not feed a lot. My daughter was happily eating and i kept feeding her and all of a sudden she threw up the whole thing. Imagine my horror after being so excited for her first feeding :( So be careful and just give her a couple of spoons at first.

Re: Starting solids

awww, mashaAllah Sahar. I also started them when she was 4 months, but very little at a time. Agree with Ira, feed little at a time and yeah, keep an eye on the bowel movements too.

Re: Starting solids

I'll definitely be careful. I've had to supplement with formula, so I'd like to replace some of that with solids. These days docs are saying 6 months, but I don't want to wait that long! She's already so interested in how we eat. Often if she's crying, I can calm her just by stuffing my face in front of her. She loves to watch! But she was born over a month early. She's hit her milestones by her birth date, not her due date, but I don't want to overdo things.

^Hmmm… one month early, I don’t know then… do ask your ped before starting.

Peds usually say that a baby’s digestive system is not developed enough to handle solids this early. I gave very little to my daughter till she turned 6 months, I just wanted her to get used to eating with a spoon and my MIL was also after me to start solids early :cb: so I kind of gave in.

But I’m a firm believer of breast-milk/formula being enough for your baby at such young an age, they don’t really need solids… but yeah its fun and it gets them used to sitting in a high chair and eating with a spoon… though its real messy :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Starting solids

I found this on a website... see if your little one is ready according to this:

Is My Baby Ready to Eat Solids?

How can you tell if your baby is ready for solids? Here are a few hints:

  • Is your baby's tongue-thrust reflex gone or diminished? This reflex, which prevents infants from choking on foreign objects, also causes them to push food out of their mouths.
  • Can your baby support his or her own head? To eat solid food, an infant needs good head and neck control and should be able to sit up.
  • Is your baby interested in food? A 6-month-old baby who stares and grabs at your food at dinnertime is clearly ready for some variety in the food department.

If your doctor gives the go-ahead but your baby seems frustrated or uninterested as you're introducing solid foods, try waiting a few days or even weeks before trying again. Since solids are only a supplement at this point, breast milk and formula will still fill your baby's basic nutritional needs.

Re: Starting solids

16 weeks already? it seems like yesterday you announced she was born. they grow so fast, eh? :D

Re: Starting solids

they really do. there's lots of photos of her newborn days, but very little video. i wish we had done more -- i think that's what really shows the change. i can't believe it sometimes!

Re: Starting solids

man 16 weeks.. how time flies.. mashallah... oh vids are soo imp sahar... its not too late ... start now! especialyl now. .cuz they are more aware and do funny actions .. newborns dont.. so start now..

as for solids... here some babies are given teh go ahead at 3 months.. its all dependant on teh baby... just follow the signs that mianva has posted... that is the guideline.. i started at ahem... 2 months.. not proper solids.. and not scheduled... i started with rice cereal. once in a day... every other day... this kept goin on until 4 months. .then he started to have more and more.. by 6 months he was on 3 meals a day. some may say its way too ahead of his age.. but my baby gave me all teh signs and took to solids well.. so why not?
but like everyone has said... start very slow.. .its definately exicting..

online you can find what to give and waht not ot give a baby when starting them off... use that list as a checklist...

I initially started with rice cereal and then went onto food purees like banana, apple, pears, etc...He's realy interested in everything I am eating at 6 months....So I'll be adding more things.

Khawateen- When you say three solid feedings a day...how do you time them and how many times does the baby nurse then?

I am so exhausted these days ...breastfeeding is really taking a toll on me...I am doing solids just once a day...I am thinking about feeding him more solids now...so can you give me some pointers please...

Re: Starting solids

Sahar...........I took my daughter to 2 different ped during past 2 weeks and both of them told me to start solids after 6 months. I know how you must be feeling I also want my guria to start having solid soon :D she is more than 20 weeks old now masha allah ........my advise is that you discus with her Dr first.

Re: Starting solids

they now suggest to wait at least till 6 months as the disgestive is not really ready before.

I started at 4 months but then stopped a week later and then really started with 6 months and she is MA eating everything thing I give her.

Re: Starting solids

thank you for all the advice!

alisha, he sounds like he's ready for more. you shouldn't be so exhausted.

yah my doc thinks we should wait. plus she was a bit early AND has had reflux (tho some sites d suggest the rice cereal to help with reflux). don't want to complicate things. but the rice cereal i might start around 5 months. i don't want her to have whole meals yet. i'm just excited to see how she reacts to different tastes.

so far she seems to enjoy the taste of those oral vaccines and her baby tylenol :D and she has no issues switching between breastmilk and formula. i think she's mashAllah happy to eat anything.

Re: Starting solids

Aww....Sahar she sounds precious MA :)
I would wait a while, there really is no rush to put them on solids so fast. I believe the 6 month rule is sufficient. I did put some rice cereal in my daughter's formula around 4 months....talk to your doctor about that...I only did it at the night time feeding so she wont get hungry in the middle of the night.

Re: Starting solids

^ She's a very good baby, mashAllah. We give her 4oz of formula for her night feed (she usually only makes it through 3oz and that's a trial because she's so sleepy after her bath) and she sleeps 8-10hrs a night!

I guess once she's used to the rice cereal, we can make that the night time feed. But because she's so sleepy, I'm pretty sure it'll be more difficult.

She just had her 4 month vaccines today. Screamed up a storm, and then minutes later she was smiling at us. She's been sleeping ever since -- hasn't even woken up for her feed. I think it's partly cuz I draped my sweater over her. She thinks I'm holding her. :D

Re: Starting solids

^ awww, too cute! she's precious mA and the spitting image of her mummy :)

Re: Starting solids

Sahar, so far I have seen no pics of your bunny.

Re: Starting solids

I'm no mother lol but I did go to school for nutrition and yes they do suggest you wait until 6 months. Breastfeed/formula exclusively until 6 months is sufficient for the baby. I have seen many people start at about 5 months but you should be careful what you start with, cereals are good to start of and then slowly introduce f/v. I'm sure you all know about the things to avoid such as egg whites, milk, nuts etc.
