So as many of you know, I run a small Islamic School. Parents have been asking us to put together a website that can feature content such as calendar of events, contact information, schedule, our newsletter, practice worksheets, articles, etc etc…
I want a website with my school name and a .org at the end. Can you suggest how I can get started? We have very limited funds but we also want a professional looking website that doesn’t look like a crappy “just had to do it” type of deal.

well you can register at Godaddy.com or any domain name registrar, I like Godaddy as their prices are pretty cheap.
I don’t like godaddy for anything else other than domains, so for hosting, you should check out BlueHost or JustHost.
Or I can host the website for $10 / month.
When you type Google it goes to a DNS server, DNS server has gooogle.com 192.168.1.1 ip address entry which points you to the right ip address and then loads the page google.com.
So you would point the DNS of your domain name at registrar to hosting providers DNS which would then display the pages when requested by the users. You just need to do it once and forget about it so no need for a lesson.
You do want a dynamic website so wordpress will do it… CMS is Content Management SYstem like wordpress, joomla, Drupal, etc.
If you don’t want to deal with the above, just make a username at wordpress.com and make site there but that will be yourschoolname.wordpress.com, not very professional.
Register your domain , rent hosting space and then post your project in elance.com , guru.com , odesk.com etc , you do not have to pay for advertising your project there. The developers pay to those website from the money they get from you.
You can setup your budget for 50 dollars , I got one very professional looking website made recently for just 65 dollars by advertising in elance.com. There are many fantastic but hungry developers in this world , willing to do great job for earning reputation on those sites , in the hope for fishing big business. Before I discovered these sites I used to pay 500 to 1000 dollars for the same work.
Wordpress has everything a school can use, you just need to know where to find that stuff but you are right, sometimes, customization are good way to differentiate your self from others.
