Starting a new business just needs 110% of your effort and good planning. Here’s some advice from my uni website:
Have a look at this site:
http://www.newbusiness.co.uk/cgi-bin/index.pl
Before starting a new business you have to decide on a number of issues:
The business will be run as a sole trader, partnership or a limited company. If the business is to be run as a partnership you will need to draw up a partnership agreement with your partner. If the business is to be run through a limited company, you will need to form a comapny.
What business you want to go into. What is the demand of the products, what is your target market, what sort of start up finance will you need.
Do some market research as to the product or service you are going to sell. Who are your competitiors, how big is the market, how you can penetrate the market.
Have you any previous business experience or do you know someone who can help you.
Business plan to raise any required finance.
Sources of finance available.
Support of your family and friends.
These are some of the issues you will need to sort out before starting your own business.
Buying a good franchise might be one of the routes to go into business.
salaams. thanx this is helpful.
ok, starting with the business plan first.
on to my next question...i just have an idea for one product.
is this something i can attain a patent for?
is it worth it to start a company for it, or just try to create and sell it directly?
if you can shed some light on type of business you'r interested in,,
Service Sales ( Are you going to Sell your Services only & no product )
Product Sales ( Your own or After Market )
Business Scale you have in mind ( Capital and Investment strength )
Answer to your 1 Q of your own product.
First Register your Company - With a Name / Business Type / and an Addrss,,,,,,,
1-Get some scatches made including design & specifications or if the Product is ready Pictures would be appropriate.
2-Register your product with govt. department (Your Local) you'll immdeatley recieve a # for Patent Pending
3-You can not retail 1 product on your own ( Unless you have several)
So you need tp promote yr product to other similar vendors or Out lets who may stock it, sell it on profit sharing.
more later,,,
The most important thing in my opinion is just getting off one's butt and pursuing an idea. Talking to people, searching the web and setting your heart on it. The advice above is really good though.
I don't know where you're based but have a look at the patents office website and contact them about your idea. Getting a patent is good but could be expensive. Once you've done that and set up the company then its a matter of research and funding.
I"m not sure about local patent offices...maybe becuz i'm right next door to the main one in dc. :)
mushi- yeah, i'm still learning..i'll post on msn too.
so i have to register the individual product as a business? does this mean once i have a business set up, i can sell other stuff in the future or would i have to constantly reregister patents?

You don't have to register individual products as business.
You need one business registeration ( usually a 'Trading Company' that is commenly used or the Inc (incorporated with one than one partner)
Each time you concieve an idea or the product you must protect it with 'patent registeration' under your 'Registered' compnay.
Under your 'Trading compnay' you may practice your business, covering wide veriety of products or services. you can even have a post box as your trading address. Quite commen in the US of A. :)
