In some arabic cultures , the host places one or two bits of tiny starters in the dinner plate decorated with some sauce …
So when the guest is invited to the table , they find something is already in their plate and while they munch on their starters , the host places the rest of the food on the table ..
Now question is , what would be the general concensus on this? would you rather be served in a clean and clear plate … or do you think having a starter or two to munch on before dinner is fully served , a good idea?
yes Reha , light starters .. like very tiny bit rolled in Filo pasty .. or cheese rolled in Filo pasty ..
Like really small and light bite size starters and just one or two of them , no more … Like just something to get them busy while the food reaches the table …kind of a thing …
It's usually very very light CB, like a dolma and tabuleh. Or moutabbal/hummous and small pita bread. If the main meal is a grilled meat platter and no rice then the host will also add a couple more starters such as cheese fatayer, manaee'sh etc.
i love starters, i always make starters, but ensure its a small quantity, and let your guests know that the main meal is on its way.
i used to make a large quantity and put it in tray for people to help themselves until i had guests who thought that was the only thing they were gonna get that night, by the time i had returned from the kitchen with the main dishes, they had virtually licked the platter clean, and their face was a show when they saw what i was bringing through.
worst of all i was left with huge amounts of food.
