Star Trek

As much as I try to enjoy any of the recent Star Trek series since, and including “Next Generation”, I can never get into them. Personally, I find that nothing can top the original Star Trek series. The movies which followed the ones with the original cast are alright, but I just can’t stand any other Star Trek TV series version other than the original. Any comments?

I never got into any Star Trek program. They all sucked.

^ good for you. Stick to moustached heroes in white jeans dancing in trees.

The Next Generation was the series in a nutshell personally. Deep-Space Nince and all the other spinoffs just seemed too 'artificial' and plastic.

I guess it was a combination of not wanting to follow another storyline in any new series (with them tending to have quite convoluted plots). And somehow identifying every new molded dough-faced alien as yet another poor imitation of Lt. Dorf.

kinda like a "Made in USA" sticker made in taiwan. Picard over Kirk anyday.

:hehe:

i think that's quite natural. We get attached to the original series.
i am not certain for myself - i haven't been really able to 'get into' any of the Star Trek series subsequent to TNG - nothing afterward comes close to that in my opinion. Even when there was a great deal of excitement about having a female Captain (Janeway) - when i saw a couple of those episodes, i really felt disappointed. Would rather have Picard any day over Janeway.

ah well - i guess we each have our personal favourites. My Ammi grew up on the 70s version and to this day, she would rather watch those rather than any of the subsequent ones.

That's true. We tend to like what we are exposed to originally, and I grew up watching the original Star Trek, and still find myself watching to this day. I don't get tired of them.

looks like you have a very bad experience of dancing in the trees in white jeans. :hehe:

tight pants and a young Madhuri do that to you ;-)

May be the orignal star trek has more charm for you but 'The next Generation ' was best star trek. Becuase it was technically very sound.

In orignal one, the captain of the ship always goes on away mission which is not appropriate as captain's primary responsibility is his ship.

In my oppinion 'The next Generation' :biggthumb

Well, TOS (The original series) had its charms but it had its weaknesses too... As for me, I used to be a die hard TOS fan, until I got to see TNG and DS9, and most recently Enterprise!!!

What makes Star Trek, The Original Series different from the other series is its originality. After sloppy ratings and a ban in the end, the series popped back up with an animated version, and then ultimately Star Trek 2, which was later turned into the first motion picture of the venture. Finally, the crew bid farewell in 1991 with their last picture and passed on their posterity to the TNG crew. Most of the movies, apart from one or two were really good.

ST:TNG was another one of Gene Roddenberry's creation, and this time he only had one well known actor in his series, Patrick Stewart, who was succesful in getting the ratings the show received throughout its 7 seasons. There were alot of loose ends and weaklings to the show, especially the characters of that idiot Wesley Crusher and Troi, whom most trekkies consider a nuisance. After the death of Gene Roddenberry, the show took a deep turn to action, when Bannon Braga became in charge. 3 out of the 4 TNG movies have been flops, where First Contact was a smashing hit, probably the best action Trek movie ever. Another thing I loved about this show was the technology shown!!! The last episode of TNG 'All Good Things..." was a marvelous feast for Quantum Physics lovers!

DS9 was another venture where Paramount got an excellent cast. The chemistry between characters such as Quark and Odo, reminded me of that between Spock and Mccoy. The show developed an excellent storyline, involving the Prophets and trekkies loved the show, and it was the only Trek Show whose ratings actually rose as it was about to end.

Voyager was where the weakness of the franchise was exposed. The chemistry between the cast was very artificial. There were desperate attampts to get ratings back up, by introducing hottie Jeri Ryan, hardly a Sci-fi actress in the show. The show was total crap!

Then came Enterprise, with veteran sci-fi actor (from quantum leap) Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, in a trek sequel. The show is excellent, and is going strong, despite the slight drop in ratings. I would say the best part of the show is Bakula himself. Once again, after TOS the cast is multi-ethnic, but Bakula and Trips role speak of American superiority once again, and rightly so, especially in a time when the International Space Station is being developed.

Fret, loyalty to TOS is natural, and I totally understand you, but you (just like me) may be unwilling to say the new shows are better, maybe because of our loyalty and love for TOS. Like the the legendary Captain Kirk said in Star Trek VI 'The Undiscovered Country', people can be very frightened of a change.
