Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

She is a versatile actress and it is difficult to judge in which role she performed her best:

As Aani (a loving aunt) in Tanhayian

As Sheena ( a jealous Doc) in Dhoop Kinary

As Haryali Begum ( a cheerful family servant) in Parosi

Or as Dadi Jaan in Tum sy kehna tha
(where she played dadi to her own son Ibrahim khalil)?

The list goes on and on and over the years we have seen her playing different characters, accepting challenging roles clearly proving herself to be one of the few actor/actress who managed to attain this level of acting. She is commonly known as Bado Appa in Showbiz industry.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

Bado aapa started character roles in young age. her first hit was 'Bi Jamalo'... a character which become identity of jaghRaloo aurat :)

Then came Shahzad Khalil's 'Teesra Kinara' where she palyed mother of Saba Pervez. A mother that came into daughter's life after a long period and had to face hatred.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

Bi jamalo was also directed by shehzad khalil? So she was a jhgralo aurat in Bi jamalo, how was the drama?

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

It was a play from black & white era, which has not been re-tecasted thanks to Zia ul Haq policy of not showing stuff from Bhutto’s period. :bummer: After Zia’s demise, the play couldn’t be telecasted as they might have lost it. It was directed by Shahzad Khalil

Badar Khalil

If there’s anyone who has made the term character actress (whatever that means) a venerable one in Pakistan, without a jot of doubt, its Badar Khalil.

Badar’s television career began in 1969-70 when she started taking part in children’s programs, reciting stories and humming songs.

After a couple of years she got her acting break in Ghufran Imtiazi’s Fikre-Farda, aired from Pindi Television. Subsequently, came a series of single plays and serials that included successful ventures like Saya, Doosra Aadmi and Platform.

But what catapulted Badar to fame in late 70’s was her uncanny portrayal of Bi Jamalo in the eponymous play, directed by Shahzad Khalil whom she had married (in real life) a few years before the drama hit TV screens. Her note-perfect performance as the wily, spineless lead character earned her great acclaim all over Pakistan. Badar had become a star.

Her next big assignment was hubby Shehzad’s tour de force Teesra Kinara from Lahore Television. The play is part of TV’s illustrious history and is considered to be one of the best ever.

From the very station, the actress also had a chance to work in a series of plays called Aur Dramey (or something like that), some of whose parts were directed by Ghazanfar Ali.

After a brief stint at LTV, Badar, along with her talented husband, shifted to Karachi. Here her first major appearance was in that classic Haseena Moin special, Unkahi, helmed by Shoaib Mansoor and Mohsin Ali.

This was precisely the serial in which her reputation as a supporting actress was firmly established. And from then on the actress did a variety of character roles with unmatched panache and style.

One of them was in Tanhaiyan in 1984, where she played Shehnaz Sheikh and Marina Khan’s bold, self-reliant and outspoken aunt, who takes care of the two girls after the demise of their parents in an accident. Shahzad Khalil directed the13-episodes.

In 1988 Badar suffered from the most serious tragedy of her life when Shahzad, her husband, died of cardiac arrest. His untimely death shook the entire country, not to mention the showbiz community.

Badar, along with her two boys, Ibrahim and Umar (who have also acted in TV plays off and on) showed resilience and bore the loss with tremendous courage. She kept on working in plays and raised her children like a responsible parent.

To date, Badar Khalil is one of the busiest actresses of Pakistan Television and is revered and highly respected for the work.

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

Badtameez log zaya kar diya :frowning: I think i have seen a clip of this drama on youtube.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

There was a program ' Comedy Comedy' hosted by Bushra Ansari and Rahat Kazmi in 90s, where they showed clips from old serials. I think they also shown a clip of this play in that program

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

She is a legendary actress and widow of genius director shehzad khalil. Though she can do any type of character with ease but some of her prominent performances are in dhoop kinarey, tanhaiyan, ankahi( my all-time favorite drama, have watched it infinite times), ajaib khana, aik aadh hafta (hum-tv telefilm).

As padosi drama is mentioned above; though this drama sucks big time, the only plus points were badar khalil and khalida riyasat.

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

Tum se kehna tha was an adaption of 1995 blockbuster, while you were sleeping.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

I still need to watch Teesra Kinara. After her husband's death she went through another tragedy, her eldest son Umar fell from 2nd or 7th floor and broke all his jaw bones.According to badar khalil he was a very handsome boy (which sure he was as we have seen him in ankahi and Ehsas) but, after that accident he never looked the same.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

Yes i know that, Sahira kazmi sort of loved adaptations.

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

She was amazing in NoorulHuda Shah’s AjaibKhana as a legendary singer who lost her voice and when went to sell old records of her songs, no one recognises her.

She can adapt character from lower class to upper class. When it comes to role of upper class lady, her performance in serials like Unkahi, Marvi are memorable.

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

Okay i agree the plus point was Khalida Riyasat,(my all time fav) i don't imagine the drama without her but Parosi don't sucks :ASA:

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

yes but good thing is she mentioned "markazi khayal makhooz" in tum se kehna tha.

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

bus yehi to aik quality hy Badar khalil ko jo bohat kam kam paye jati hy that she was able to perform any x,y,z role.:k:

Re: Star of the Week........Badar Khalil

lolzz. well everyone has personal likes/dislikes but i remember when it was on-aired in 1993 people were highly disappointed with padosi and especially with saleem sheikh-marina khan boring tragedy scenes.:D

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

another memorable performance by Badar Khalil was in Mohsin Ali’s ‘Shaheen’ based on Naseem Hijazi’s novel, where she played a christian lady married to a Muslim guy Abu Daud. Huma Akbar played her christian daughter and Misbah Ishaq (now Misbah Khalid) was her step daughter. The confrontation scenes (between her and Misbah) on conversion of her christian daughter to Islam were well executed.

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

Hahaha my friend is still in love with those Romantic scenes :cb: But, don’t you think their immature acting was somewhat balanced by the presence of mature actors like khalida, badar khalil and ijaz ali? Overall the drama was good and after knowing your opinion i am not going to confess my liking for the drama here :nahi:which i already have :smack:

Re: Star of the Week…Badar Khalil

It was a drag :biggthumb:
