No. 10 for me!
Sir Laurence Olivier is also a great choice. But Chaplin was able to make impact everywhere introducing copycats like Raj Kapoor. Robert de Nero has author backed roles. Marlon Brando, I don't rate highly.
Go for no.10 baby.....ya hoooo
dil..dilseeee
Chaplin for sure :)
Am I allowed to say : Amitabh Bachchan ??!!
:)
Haha bombaykid ur allowed to say whatever u want. But I think instead of Amitabh...Dilip Kumar wud've been more appropriate. don't u think?
Dilip Kumar indeed changed the grammer and style in Hindi film industry. But got caught in the web. 'Sagina Mahato' and 'Devdas' were brilliant. Hardly a notable performance after that of that level.
Dilip Kumar never had the star appeal of Amitabh. Doing one film a year, his films were often hit. But Dev Anand, Shammi Kapur and Raj Kapoor ruled by side. And Shammi's popularity at peak was way ahead of Dilip Kumar at any time in his career.
The whole super-star thing started when Rajesh Khanna managed to take entire female audience with him. Them came big B.
Amitabh, as a different story. Even flop movies of him earned enough not be in loss. Much better than the films he acted in, he always was able to convince audience that he could beat 12 guys at a time or whatever. This phenomenon continued from seveties to ninties. No longer. Everything comes to end.
As an actor, one could compare Dilip Kumar and Amitabh. As a star, Amitabh is way ahead. But as an actor, many names come to mind, Moti Lal, Balraj Sahani, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Sanjeev Kumar, Nana Patekar (which role of Dilip can be put on par with Naseer's 'Sparsh' or Nana's 'khamoshi' or Balraj Sahni's 'do bigha zameen' and numerous roles of Sanjeev Kumar) all of which can be put at same level as Dilip or better.
Star appeal of Amitabh is unparalleled in Hindi films. Not matched by anyone in the past, may it be Ashok Kumar or Prithwiraj kapur, Rajesh Khanna or Raj-Dev-Dilip trio of 60's.
But the reason I chose Chaplin, is that Chaplin's influence and appeal was biger and he continues to draw audience still. A coplete master of everything related to films, he was THE star

Homer Simpson rules!!
Hum Sa.....
Yes, I think Dilip Kumar is easily the best actor India has produced. My dad thinks he's the best in the world --- Period !!
It's just that my generation has grown up watching Amitabh films and his films have become a part of our culture (although I hate the movies he's doing these days). I still remember the time when he was injured while making the film "Coolie" and he was in one of Bombay's hospitals. There used to be a huge gathering outside the hospital. There used to be regular prayers in mosques and temples all over India for his wellbeing. Those who were in India will recall what an amazing sight it was. I don't know of any movie star in the world who had this kind of frenzied following !
Nope! Dilip not the best, no way easily the best. For example, Naseeruddin Shah is better as actor. Remember 'sparsh'.
If u confine discussion to Hindi stars, Meena Kumari and Nargis are others who had frenzied following. (It is interesting that in old times actressess, say meena kumari, madhubala, great nutan, vahida rehman ('dastak' 'chetna', 'khamoshi'), nargis were far better than actors of that time like Joy Mukerjee, Rajendra kumar and other popular idiots.)
