Standard of Pakistani Eucational Institutions

Salams

Its quite disappointing to see the academic standards that are being followed in some top Pakistani institutions.

If the problems stemmed from a LACK OF RESOURCES, such as inadequate research facilities or lack of properly qualified teachers, it would have been still understandable. But the issue is not that. The very basic system is corrupt. The system is unjust.

We’ve all been students and a very crucial factor is to be able to reap the rewards of your hard work justly. Its important that your homework and exams be graded fairly, the whole class be graded in a uniform manner. You should be able to check your answers against a key, go back to the professor if there are discrepencies. Your results should depend on the work you’ve produced.

That’s not the case here though. Answer scripts are usually not even returned to the students. And this is the norm! The more you do makhan bazi of your professors and TA’s/graders, the more you suck up to them, the more marks you get.

There are political parties like Jamat Islami, PPP and so on and if you have clout with those you get preference.

The paper is sometimes “out” before the exam.

Secondly, the culture of cheating is so prevalent that everyone has to cheat. If you’re a good student and don’t let ppl cheat off you, you are a social pariah and could face physical consequences.

Imagine being a student, working hard for your exam, thinking you’ve done well, but then gettinhg bad marks and not even being able to see why because you are not allowed to see your answer script after its been checked. To top it off, the person who never studied at all during the year, was involved in bullying and political activities, and who forcefully cheated off you in the exam, topping the class. Won’t this turn you into a bitter soul?

Its because of this kind of an environment that we’ve developed a culture of dishonesty. Hard work is not the way to excel academically in many institutions. This is so demoralising for the students and no wonder the product of these institutions is not a typical starry eyed, hopeful and innocent youth but a hardened and bitter person.

That´s a really sad state of affairs. That is also one of the main reasons why all those who can afford it, send their kids abroad for studies. And many times these kids don´t return to Pakistan then.

Result: Brain drain :(

Yeah, its really sad, I've heard that even sometimes students grade the exams!! If you are in good terms with your prof. you get good marks, if you disagree with his views, he fails you or gives out bad grades.

I’ve heard that these practices are more common in government colleges.. I wonder what can be done about these issues?
My nephew studies in 5th grade in Karachi and he’s usually so frustrated, he was severely bullied by his class mates and seniors few months back and the teachers didn’t take any responsibility at all.

Bhai sahab, I was not "sent abroad to study". I was born here.

irem i read your posts with interest. However, i differ with you on this one. You are making a lot of generalizations. There may be some schools in pak, like any other country, where things are not very good but generally speaking, the educational standards in pak are very much up to par, and sometimes even higher than western schools; and here I am talking about schools, colleges, and universities. I have come across many, many young people who were average to above average in their primary or secondary schools in pak, but they really shine once they join the schools in US.
