Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India to play A team tri-series

COLOMBO, June 26, 2003 (Reuters)

Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India will compete in a new annual A team triangular tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) announced on Thursday.

The seven-match event will rotate between the three countries during the next three years, with the first to be held in Sri Lanka from August 15-22.

The tournament forms part of an intensified schedule for Sri Lanka’s A team, which also includes 14 planned tours from September 2003 to February 2005.

“This comprehensive format will provide valuable experience and enable the BCCSL to identify potential national cricketers,” the BCCSL said in a statement.

India have yet to be cleared to face Pakistan away from the World Cup
India and Pakistan cricketers will meet on the subcontinent for the first time in three years after authorities agreed to send second-string teams to a tournament in Sri Lanka.
The A-teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will compete in a one-day triangular tournament, named the Emerging Trophy, from August 15 to 22

And organisers hope to make the event annual, rotating the venue between the participating countries.

Since 2000, India's government has prevented the senior side from playing Pakistan in any tournament except the World Cup, because of tensions over disputed border territory.

"At least a start has been made - it will be a good opportunity for our bench strength to gain experience," said an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

India have not played a Test match in Pakistan since 1989, while Pakistan played three Tests in India in 1999-2000 despite threats from Hindu fundamentalists to disrupt the tour.

The BCCI is still awaiting word from the government to resume games with Pakistan at senior level after a recent improvement in diplomatic relations.

The Indian board has proposed two limited-overs matches, one each in both countries, in September, followed by a three-Test series in Pakistan in March next year.

Indian sports minister Vikram Verma said recently it was too early to accept the BCCI proposal but admitted there had been a change in the government's view on the matter.

"Earlier we used to outright reject any proposal by cricket officials to play against Pakistan; now we are willing to consider such proposals," he said.
