June 15, 2014: Pakistan’s men won a third straight Asian Team Championships title by coming from behind to beat Malaysia 2-1 in an exciting final in Hong Kong.
Malaysia No. 2 Nafiizwan Adnan twice came from behind to beat Farhan Zaman 3-2 (10-12, 11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8) in a thrilling opening match, raising the team’s hopes of adding to their titles in 2000, 2006 and 2008.

However, Pakistan’s young No. 1 Nasir Iqbal then came from a game down to beat Ong Beng Hee 3-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-7) and force a deciding match between the teams’ third-ranked players.
The left-handed Farhan Mehboob then clinched victory for Pakistan with a comfortable 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-6) win over Ivan Yuen, leading to lively celebrations on the court.

Iqbal said he wasn’t expecting to have to beat 34-year-old Ong to keep Pakistan in the match, but the 20-year-old team captain produced a sensational performance to overcome the vastly experienced Malaysian in their first-ever encounter.
“We were defending champions so we were really hopeful we would win this time, so we’re very happy we won this tournament. We hope to keep improving in the world,” Iqbal said. “I had a crucial match because I was playing their No. 1 guy, a very senior and experienced player. We were expecting our second player (Farhan Zaman) to win and he played very well, but it was close and he lost the match, so that’s why the pressure was on me.

“I played really well today, but it was great to have my teammates and our women’s team supporting me. Our third player (Farhan Mehboob) is a very experienced player with great skill so we were very hopeful of winning the match. He played very well to win us the title.”
Semi-finalists Kuwait and India shared the bronze, while Hong Kong beat Japan 2-0 in the fifth place playoff and Singapore beat Iran 2-0 to finish seventh in the 16-team tournament.
