I think you should be able to give your children things in life that make them happy and comfortable, without raising them to feel a sense of entitlement, that they have the right to have whatever they want. And also to not make them so focused on material things, that thats all they care about and if they dont have that particular toy/dress/whatever, than nothing is right in their life. And also balancing that with always a sense of thanks for everything they have been blessed with, regardless of how much or how little it may seem, and sharing with others and being generous in actively giving to charity and helping out the needy. I think all these are important for the healthy nurturing of a well-balanced child
I really dont think the example you have posted can be classified as 'spoiling'.
If you hadn't bought her those, she might have felt left out and different from the rest of the kids in her class, and our kids dont need any more help in that particular aspect.
Giving in to their every whim is spoiling.
