**South Sudan’s main party has said it will boycott this week’s parliamentary and municipal elections in most of northern Sudan.**The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) said it would refuse to participate “on all levels” in 13 of the 15 northern states.
The SPLM announced last week that its candidate had withdrawn from Sudan’s presidential election.
Sunday’s polls are meant to be Sudan’s first multi-party elections since 1986.
President Omar al-Bashir has threatened to cancel a referendum on independence for the south due in January if the SPLM boycotts the polls. This article is from the BBC News website. © British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
