Guys, there's no denying that Pakistan did indeed play a part in the making of now known 'Taliban', back then they were known as Mujahideen (i.e. Freedom Fighters). But you must also understand and acknowledge that it was not Pakistan's idea to create Taliban from scratch. Uncle Sam wanted to support them against the Soviets, and it did indeed flow lots of cash and advanced weapons to the mujahideen, which hurt soviets badly. It was the American Stinger launchers which brought down a countless number of low flying fighters, and choppers. After which Soviet soldiers refused to fly low for the fear of being shot down.
Saudi Arabia ofcourse was as equal a partner in helping the Mujahideen as the U.S. For every dollar US funded, Saudis contributed double that. Least to say, US might have provided the then Mujahideen and today's "Taliban" with intel as well as the know-how.
To consolidate the entire blame on Pakistan and not look to the other players who fostered the idea and used Pakistan as a route-stop, is not only irresponsible, but a plain lie.
After the soviets abandoned their ambitions to occupy Afghanland, U.S. soon pulled back all the support with the purpose having been served. This is where Pakistan's role became that much more central because Pakistan was the home to countless number of Afghan refugees, as well as base of continued support to reconcile the country which had been war-torn. US should have been there to pick up the tab and help in restoring democracy and bringing Just Rule to the land they sort of helped "liberate" indirectly. Because US turned its back on Afghans, Pakistan could not. It was a neighbor and a brotherly nation of the same faith with a rich history of trade routes which tied the two nations together.
What is happening today is outright retaliation for the abandonment of Aghans in the 80's by the US, not only that, get this, and this is real rich. US, the back then mujahideen supporter, is now itself aiming at occupying Afghanistan. Deja vu?
Lets look at all the facts, even the bitter ones that some of us may have trouble talking about, instead of finding the easy scapegoat 'Pakistan'.....

I think your recount of how Taleban came about is fair. But from the highlighted section is where IMO Pakistan made huge huge mistakes.
What did the govt of Pakistan do at that point to disband the so called 'mujahideen'? NOTHING. Instead ISI was actively using them as field force, with fond hopes of tearing Kashmir apart from India.
If it was merely a question of handling the cost of sustaining the refugees, it would have been straight forward. But Govt of Pakistan could never bring itself (even today) to separate itself from militant terrorists because they needed thsn in Kashmir!

Well Pakistan lost Benazir to Taleban .... she was instrumental in creating them .... along with her close to a 1000 security personal have been killed by Taliban symphatizers.... so it is pay back time for the Paksitan military establishment.
If you dont know the difference between the Mujahedins and Taleban, then you really dont know what is happening in Afghanistan. Taleban as a force came up after the Russians had left Afghanistan. Infact it is Mulalh Omar who himself had said that he wanted to save Afghanistan from the so called "Mujahid" ...... so go figure it out for yourself.
