I am all for Ijtihad if its done under the premise to reform the Islamic laws needed it should be done by Jurists and lawyers and Judges who are well educated in Islamic law. But to say that anyone can do that is a wrong statement. Its like telling the police officer that ohhh I just changed the speed limit on the beltway. It cannot be done that way. Of course one can ask for change in speed limit but one also has to remember that there is a process and then there is reasonable limits. You cant just say that we need 120 MPH limit on the beltway and I am going to do it. This is what Manji is asking for and that’s why she gets all these nasty answers because in the name of reform she is asking stupid and unreasonable reformation.
Ijtihad can never allows something which is clearly ordained haram by Quran and sunnah, so if we need reform we need it in the Shura, the financial sector, women rights Zakat on modern industry and so many other areas not on issues like gays and lesbians rights, now you know why they say .....“Aa jatay hain Ijtihad kernay”.
