Spironolactone anyone?

Is anyone here on spironolactone? Have you experienced any side effects? Why were you prescribed the drug? Did you go to an endocrinologist or a gynecologist or some other doc?

Thank you!

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

why are you taking spironolactone? for hair loss?

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

I'm not on it but I was wondering if anyone here is on it for its anti-androgen effect?

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

What are you taking it for? As far as I was aware, is it not a potassium sparing diuretic used to treat heart failure or ascities? However, as it is mineralcorticoid antagonist (i thought just aldosterone) it could work on other androgen pathways?

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

That sounds like a med student response. Are you one? :)

Yes you are right, but I've heard that it is also used as an anti-androgen and just wanted to know if anyone here is on it.

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

Lol, yes, is it that obvious that I have tried to memorise a textbook :)

I have had a quick search & there seem to be lots of papers on its use as an anti-androgen, particularly in the treatment of acne, hirstuism & PCOS. Havn't seen anyone been prescribed it before though.

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

lol yes. :) Did you forget that a side effect is gynecomastia (which is a hint to its anti androgen effects)?

And yes, PCOS etc is what I was wondering about.

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

It's not first line in treating androgenic conditions like hirustism or PCOS, because it's not the most effective drug availble and has a lot of side effects.

If you're having probs like hair loss, hirustism or PCOS and you're female you generally get referred to a gynaecologist but a general practioner is just as good. Contraceptives like Dianette and Yasmin are the best way forward

Also important to note that if you're overweight with PCOS then the best treatment is weight loss and maybe a drug for diabetics called metformin that's been shown to work well in these women...

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

I have been taking Spironolactone for a number of years now (more than 5 years). I suffer from PCOs and was prescribed with Spiro because of a family history of DVT when taking Dianette (which is usually prescribed for PCO sufferers).

Over the years the dosage I have been prescribed with has increased, and I actually take the maximum allowed dosage now, but I have never suffered any of the known side effects Alhamdulillah :)

I also take Metformin, just as a side note.

Re: Spironolactone anyone?

I ve been taking dianette, metformin and spironolactone in pakistan but my gp in the UK has asked me not to take spironolactone as they don't have much evidence of it in reducing hirustism...she said that spironolactone is being prescribed in pakistan and some other countries but in the UK they don't prescribe it as it got side effects....i discontinued using it but when i was on spironolactone i was fine and it helped me with my problem...and for how long can we take dianette??? i have been told u have to discontinue it after 2 years and take a gap and then can start again...as it also got many side effects? does anybody know? sisters?
