I had the best ever spinach rolls from a Turkish restaurant today. They looked quite simple but tasted heavenly. I believe it was spinach and feta cheese cooked in puff pastry… but im not sure.
Does anyone know what im talking about… and more importantly, does anyone have a yummy recipe for it?
They are actually called Pastitzi and they have Ricotta not Feta. They are served with some Tzaziki (yogurt dip) on the side.
I have 'em all the time, now Im quite bored with 'em :@:
YOu can actually buy 'em from the frozen section of any supermarket and the best thing bout them is that they arent pre-cooked. The filo pastry is raw so when you put them in the oven they come out light and fresh.
Blanch spinach and then squeeze it to get all the water out.
In a bowl add the spinach, some Ricotta, seasoning (salt, pepper) mix it all up. (some ppl add spring onions to it too)
Take a sheet of filo pastry, cut it into 3 equal parts lengthwise.
Fold one sheet of pastry in half lengthwise, place one spoonful of spinach mixture in one corner and fold over to form a triangle. Continue folding to end of pastry. Repeat with remaining pastry and spinach mixture.
Heat oil and butter and brush over tops of pastry triangles. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for about 30 minutes or until brown and crisp. Serve hot.
Having said that, a desi version of this would be, if you have leftover chanaykidaal cooked with spinach you can use that as a filling. Tastes yummy
Adra, what you're saying sounds almost similar to what I had and im sure its very good as well, but I dont like ricotta one bit. What I had was ispanakli borek and it doesnt come with yogurt, its delicious all on its own. I think Im gonna try the recipe you posted and substitute the ricotta part with feta cheese instead.
Oh, and I forgot to mention... im sure I saw and tasted onions in there as well.
