SPF Foundation and flash

Do pictures taken with flash really make you look like a ghost when you’ve used a foundation with SPF in it? Anyone who’s experienced this?

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

I have heard that too and its even worst if you have HD powder on your face :( i wish i knew this before buying MUFE HD powder :( So regrat it now!!

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Foundations with SPF are useless anyway because a strength of 15-20 isn't going to protect you. Might as well use an SPF 30 or higher under your regular foundation.

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

If the SPF is really high, it does tend to give a white cast. BUT I once used an SPF 90 and had pictures taken with it and it was fine in flash photography. I dont know if it's because my skin is on the light side or because I had rubbed it in very well. One product which gives me a white cast is when I use the MAC Studio Finish Concealer which has an SPF of 30-35 but then again, I buy 1 shade lighter anyway for imperfections so when I dont buff it in well enough it does look lighter in flash. I always top it with a matte powder which helps.

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Do you know if MUFE HD foundation does it too?

Drugstore.com doesn’t help with the ingredients :grumpy:

I won’t be using it as a sunblock :stuck_out_tongue: I have my own sublock to take care of it. I was looking at buying a foundation but it says SPF on it and I don’t want to spend my money on something and have the pictures turn out crummy.

So you reckon if I just finished with a powder the SPFness of it would be minimized?

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Ideally, you'll be photographed best in foundation without SPF. This goes for flash, as well as natural light. So if you can avoid it, all the better. They give this advice to brides. If you can't avoid it, you can also tone it down with bronzer, or a finishing powder that's slighter darker than your foundation. Also, if you tend to mix shades to get your match, try and mix it with an SPF-free foundation, that way not every product you're putting on your face contains SPF. It sucks that due to uninformed consumer demand, they're putting SPF (that too, 15 or 20) in everything now.

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

M's tip is good - finishing with a matte powder will tone down the titanium dioxide cast. Apart from SPF ones, I've also noticed this problem with luminescent/light-reflecting foundations ...

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

^^ YEAAHH I’ve seen some horrible celeb pics with the luminizer wihch just looks like a abd makeup job.

If I’m going to be patting a darker color on top of my foundation, why am I getting it matched to my skin tone then :grumpy: Grrr this is not fun. :hinna:

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Murgi:

I'm currently usling MUFE HD Foundation and also have NARS Sheer Glow. Both do NOT give me a white case. I "finish" it with MAC Pressed Blot Powder.

As for ingredients....have you tried putting in the name of the specific product and then "ingredients" and googling it? For example: "MUFE HD Foundation ingredients".

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

If you have access, try it on at the store, then step outside and take plenty of pictures with/without flash. Also check it in the parking lot in natural light. If you can come back the next day, all the better - at home you can see how the foundation sits on your skin after a couple hours. I rarely wear foundation but when I buy it this is what I do. Saves me exchanging/returning.

If this is a blind/online purchase, maybe try MUA for reviews for the one you're buying.

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Thanks guys for the tips. I am definitely not going to buy it online since it's too much of a risk with the shade matching and online.

Paheli: I was thinking about getting MUFE HD however I did read that it tends to slide off oily faces, and my T-zone is horribly out of control for some reason. Does that happen with you too?

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

DONT TELL ME YOU'RE ON MUA! That's like the makeup Fight Club, it doesn't get mentioned outside the site, lol

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

I have a VERY oily t-zone too.

This is what I use on my t-zone as a “primer” and personally, I love it. The “sample” is only $4 and they have free shipping within the U.S. (look under their “discount” section). Home Chemical Peels, Anti Aging, Acne, Scars | Makeup Artist's Choice – Makeup Artists' Choice

And on top of the foundation…I use MAC Pressed Blot powder.

With the primer AND the foundation, I highly recommend you get a sample before buying. It’s not the cheapest foundation…lol…so you want to make sure it works for YOUR skin. Peresonally I didn’t have any issues getting samples from Sephora.

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Wait, what, but, I thought, oh sheet. This is all yer fault, you mentioned it a few times so I followed suit. I guess this means someone’s got to die. It’s either me or Murgi. Bumping off the right one means fried chicken for dinner. I trust you will make the right decision, Durden.

:yummy:

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

AHA! But that's assuming I'm not part of the club ;)

Paheli: I've found a MUFE store around my area (I know, I was just as surprised!) so hopefully I'd be able to get a sample from them, as well as get color matched. The few times I have asked for samples from Sephora I've never gotten any =( But that's ok, the products I did buy they were worth the full price :D

Re: SPF Foundation and flash

Update: ok soooooo I bought it. I thought, what the heck. I'm a noob, it's worth an experimentation and it's only SPF 6. And gosh almighty does it ever give that white-cast. However, I don't think it's too bad. If I layer on a powder on top, it can be fixed. So now I need a recommendation on either a setting powder, or a powder foundation that I can use.
