According to the Pakistani news media, “Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will spend 2 billion US dollars to induct three Boeings 777, seven turboprop aircraft by 2003 and integrate Airbus A-340 series aircraft and purchasing two A310-300 freight aircraft in 2006. The reason for buying these aircraft as stated by the Chairman PIA Retired Lt.Gen Hamid Nawaz in a news conference is that these aircraft are available at much lower price than normal. He also said that the PIA board has made this decision because of the worldwide slump in the air travel market especially after 9/11 attacks in US. He further disclosed that the purchase of new aircrafts will be a part of $ 2 billion phased fleet replacement plan to buy almost a dozen planes by 2011. In addition to this, the Managing Director PIA Ch Ahmed Saeed said that the national carrier is determined to take strides ahead and already its complexion in favour of passenger-comfort, profitability and services. He assured that the expectations of the traveling public would be met.”
It has been commonly observed by that the Pakistanis living abroad prefer to choose other Airlines than PIA for traveling to Pakistan. Due to the sub-standard services, behaviour and arrogant attitude of the managerial staff, PIA never attracted its own country fellows. So, when PIA could not get the business from their own people how can they extend their business among the other travelers?
However, when one looks at the performance in competition with other Air carriers which fly to Pakistan like Singapore, Bangkok and Malaysian Airlines one finds that PIA performance in relation to the business, passenger services, ticketing, inquiries etc are far from near to the services being provided by referred Airlines.
If the government of Pakistan is really sincere to bring the good image among the international customer services of its national flag carrier in regard to the traveling business, it has to change the present culture of PIA. The performance of international offices and their managers should be investigated and refined.

This reasoning is nonsense, as most airlines agree that traffic levels have recovered significantly. These aircraft are needed to replace aging fleet, nothing to do with arrogant staff etc which seems to be a personal opinion. I reserve my comments on customer service, as it doesn't matter what aircraft is flown in order to provide lousy service. I just hope the new aircraft have rear TV sets like BA/Emirates/Virgin. Emirates has taken a lot of business away from PIA.
Ideally they should privatize PIA, but they should go a step further. Break it into 8 or 10 different companies (e.g., Maintenance, Cargo, Freight Handling, two or three smaller airlines – one for international, one for local, and one for short haul local). See what kind of opportunities it will bring to the airline industry in Pakistan. PIA has been an overfed elephant immersed in corruption nepotism and underachievement.

Even most of the international flight planes have got TV sets in PIA already. New fleet does count towards quality of service, but only the behavior of its staff will make the difference!
The people who fly with PIA are those who just dont care of airline they are flying with, those who dont have choice, or who just want a direct flight to PAK. There are no other reason people flying PIA cause of its service on the ground or in the air.

I'd have to go with NYA.
Govt. should Privatize big companies like PIA and WAPDA.
Plus, spending dollars, I think will change the image of PIA. You'd get good management, great service, if the company is in surplus.

I agree, PIA service is very bad, planes are not clean, food is terriable. The cost of the ticket is not worth all the hassel which comes with it. My friends in the US says to use PIA, but I disagree. I always fly United.

I flew with PIA from London to Karachi in 2002. I had a fantastic time.

I flew twice from london to lahore and back. I didnt have very bad time but it wasnt something that will attract me to fly with it. I always prefer Emirates over PIA.
if PIA is playing with international players it has to compete well, monoply days are over now! Emirates flying to more than six airports in pakistan taking all the pessangers from PIA and still cheaper than PIA.

Something didn't attract you at all?
Wait........
Is this the case of Air-Hostess? :D
I heard PIA have started hiring young girls as Air-Hostess. Plus, their dress is also going to be change, likely skirt.

Shak,
Before competing with other International Airlines, Pakistan got to invest, repair PIA. Give favorable amount of pay to her workers, which will certainly make the service of PIA, first class. PIA is in debt. I think if Govt. starts Privatizing PIA, slowly, both public and private sector will overcome the mangement problems. :)
So does this give you the right to make fun of Muslim women? Its sad when Muslims like you say Pakistani women should wear a skirt. Its the same people like that twist the Sharia law and make like misrable for Muslim women.
You might think its funny and say LOL and say leave that to Allah(SWT) and make fun of the whole situation, but I don’t think you are in the majority here.

Oh Gosh, where did I make fun of Muslim women? First tell me that, and situation as well. You are taking this matter in a wrong way. As neither of us is GOD, therefore, neither of us can judge who's better or evil.

I was talking about the service only. btw no one attracted in that way too.
for your second point, I can give you best example of srilankan airlines. they dont much resources like PIA but still they are rated much higher than PIA.
I agree privitisation will make difference, cause then people will work properly on their jobs and this will result in good service!
