If you had a kid, would you make him participate in a spelling bee? I mean is it really worth it to become a social outcast and be made fun of as a nerd just so that u dont have to use spell check the rest of ur life?

I wouldn't. Of course I would ensure that he/she knows how to read and write but not take it as far as memorizing how each word is spelled. Why spend time memorizing something that you can look up. What are the chances they'll use those difficult words in everyday life/conversations? Not great. If there is a need to write those words, I am sure MS Word can assist.
