Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

Hi Folks,

I’m going to buy a new desktop as my present one got ALLAH ko pyara (born 1999, died 2009) . Marhoom was P3 with Windows XP and had a lot of qualities.

Anywayz, Now when I’ve to buy another one, I’m a bit confused in the selection of OS cuz i’v heard so many diversified things about it. And in vista, which flavor? (Basic, ultimate or premium) And what should be the combination of hardware as per that? I dont want to think about purchasing another one atleast for next 3-5 yrs after that.

Appreciate your suggestion. Thanks.

P.S.: The desktop will be used for day-to-day activity. Nothing exclusive

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

3) 2 or 3 GB RAM
4) Hard disk as much like.
5) Video card as you prefer !

For a PC that’ll be your workhorse for moderate to medium use, i would recommend AMD Processor. The reason is cost.

AMD CPU+Mobo can be purchased for >$150, if you were looking at the same spec Intel chip, it would run you well over $200. (figurative example, actual prices maybe different). You could easily use that extra money to purchase a decent LCD monitor or go bigger on a Hard Drive.

Otherwise go with the specs firenze has provided. That should be a decent enough system.

If you use your PC to do multimedia and/or play games, etc. You may want to get a good graphics card as well. NVidia has a good name in graphics industry.

AMD Quad core 3.0 Ghz cpu+mobo combo: $145
AMD Dual Core cpu+mobo combo: $130

Intel Quad Core 2.66 Ghz +mobo combo: $250
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.80 Ghz+mobo combo: $170

For more, you can check out Tigerdirect.com or other similar websites just to get an idea of how much putting together a system can run you.

450-Watt Mid Tower Case: $40.00
AMD Quad core 3.0 Ghz cpu+mobo combo: $145
Seagate 500-Gig SATA Hard Drive: $60.00
PNY DDR2 2gig Ram: $25.00 (Choose carefully to make sure memory is compatible with motherboard)
17" Acer LCD Monitor: $99.00
LG Multilayer DVD Burner: $30.00
Wiresless Keyboard/Mouse combo: $25.00
or
Wired/USB Keybd/Mse/Spkr combo:$25.00

Grand Total: $424.00 (tax/shipping not included) + $40.00 for a somewhat decent 512MB Video Card](TigerDirect Sunset)

A lot of things would depend on what you use the computer for. I'm trying to avoid Vista. I myself was considering waiting for Windows 7 to be released, then I'd look into buying a new PC since mine also died recently. If I were to buy one now, I'd put XP on it.

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

I disliked vista at first too, and no doubt it’s no champ or proven error-free like XP just yet. But, once you learn and get used to Vista, you grow to love it. It is already patched upto SP2, so it’s much smoother now than when it first came out.

Win7 is definitely something to look fwd to. It should be much better than Vista according to leaks and rumors. :k:

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

I find Vista slower and lame compared to XP. I use Mac and prefer this over any other OS. Perhaps I some people like it becuase of its Mac like features.

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

Vista seems slow because it's superloaded with graphics, and especially the aerotheme. XP was quicker because it was simpler compared to vista.

Nonetheless, XP remains most stable so far compared to vista. But vista gets props as well. Windows 7 will probably be the mature variation of vista (in a way).

very nice suggestions :k:

if u play gam,es make sure u get an nvidia 8800 gt or above

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

I would dump vista and go for Windows 7, much much better performance on machines that already had vista installed. At least on few laptops and desktops that I tried.

Try vista and/or win7 in 64 bit mode.

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

window 7 is the best

coming out in oct :)

Re: Specs for new desktop:Plz suggest

Vista runs very well if you have atleast 2GB of RAM available.
