Mybe it has to do with racism? The South is poulated by stereotyped dark skinned non Hindi/Urdu speaking populations... Perhaps the present state of the southern regions is a result of centuries of prejudicial neglect on the part of Northerners, who just happned to be stereotyped as being light skinned "Aryans?"
Thats is my theory.

to put it simply, the north has always been at turmoil for centuries. even in modern times, the south went thru socialist and anti-caste revolutions under able leaders, while the north suffered badly at sudden loss of leadership within a decade of independence. south reaps the social gains of a little primary education, north isnt there just as yet.

women are treated equal in south compared to north also the litracy
level is high and caste syystem is much less regid. its get better in
sri lanka because of only surviving bhudist country in south asia.

Northerns drive cabs and trucks in USA. Southerns launch rockets and write drivers for super computers.

Good assessment Channji. Simple but good.

Gurcharan Das writes about this dichotomy in India Unbound. Where he compares Punjab and Kerala. On a HDI comparison of infant mortality, access to education and other social indicators, Kerala enjoys living standards and equality compared to the west. However, due to the staunch socialist tendencies it lags behind Punjab in GDP and some of the economic benefits of liberlalization. The answer lies somewhere in the middle, I guess.
