south asian population in the south

Are there desi people living in any southern states and how comfortable is the atmosphere and how desi friendly is it?..anyb 07

dy here visit there?

Re: south asian population in the south

LOL I bet if they are in Gorgia or something they must have a thick southern accent. LMAO If i come across a Pakistani who speaks like that i'll just die laughing. Samething happened to me when i met a Pakistani from Glasgow and he had a thick scotish accent. I had to hold my laughter because i kept picturing him with an orange beard and a kilt.

Re: south asian population in the south

Born and raised in the South! (Texas!)

Depends on where you are, but the bigger cities like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Birmingham, etc are very desi friendly!

Re: south asian population in the south

There defo are.. I remember it being mentioned on here once..

Quite a few from Texas..

Re: south asian population in the south

Desis are everywhere! Dallas, Houston & Atlanta have thriving pakistani/indian communities!! Really nice masjids, all the grocery and desi shops you could ever want and plenty of zabiha/halal eateries....

Re: south asian population in the south

Hmmm I'm not living in the USA but will be visitn Arizona and Texas soon. I would imagine there were some desi folk around although I will be on the whole staying wide away from settled areas and most likely be out in the country for some odd jobs.

Re: south asian population in the south

You'll still see desis in the smaller towns, "country" areas of Texas....mainly because of gas station/motel owners (stereotypical, i know!). You'll probably be mistaken for mexican/latino in those areas anyway. Be careful in rural parts of Arizona, that state has some stupid maslay going with their new law about police being able to probe/check immigration status

Re: south asian population in the south

^ I know my sponsors were quite clear that there was no way I would be able to roam free without thier guidance… ussually I think I can handle anywhere but Arizona is one place I will make sure I stick close the herd as it were the last thing I want is to be mistaken for a Latino… :omg:

Re: south asian population in the south

Has anybody visited the less diverse southern states like South Carolina? Wondering if it is desi friendly...

Re: south asian population in the south

Lived in North Carolina for around 9 years (research triangle area) and was very comfortable. In fact population of desis and muslims is growing there at good pace because of good schools, no-so-expensive housing and tech jobs.

Re: south asian population in the south

Georgia: Atlanta has a huge huge desi population. Went to school there and love it. Smaller surrounding towns maybe tricky if you don't understand the accent, but comfortable regardless.

SC: Lovely place and you should have any problems.
