(Oakland, CA), January 11, 2004 — Auditions for Wajahat Ali’s The
Domestic Crusaders, a two act play that chronicles the cultural, and religious conflicts of a modern Muslim Pakistani American family will be held at the West Oakland Branch Library Auditorium, 1801 Adeline Street in Oakland, on Saturday, January 31 and February 7th from 12 - 3 PM.
South Asian actors interested in auditioning for The Domestic Crusaders
should be men between the ages of 21 and 75, and women in their 20s and mid-fifties. The play calls for four men and two women. A male or female narrator of any age is also needed.

The Domestic Crusaders will be performed as a stage reading in late April 2004.

The Domestic Crusaders focuses on one day in the life of a family of six
eclectic, unique members who convene at the family house for a birthday lunch.
With a background of 9-11 and the scapegoating of Muslim Americans, the tensions and sparks fly among the three generations, culminating in an intense family battle as each crusader struggles to assert and impose their respective voices and opinions, while still attempting to maintain and understand that unifying thread that makes them part of the same family.

The three generations of the family include: the grandfather, Hakim, a
retired, Pakistani army official who harbors a terrible secret; Salman, his son, middle aged corporate engineer trying to maintain his pride and self-respect;
Khulsoom, Salman’s wife, longing for her homeland and wishing to impart her traditions, values, and morals to her American-born children; Saladin, the eldest child, stubbornly clinging to his ideals of success, as well as his anger and resentment towards his father; Fatima, the middle child, passionately advocating her Islamic identity, while rejecting the traditional stereotypes and biases of her mother; Ghafur, the youngest, the golden child abandoning his family’s
expectations in order to discover his own path.These individuals are The
Domestic Crusaders!
Playwright Wajahat Ali is a 23-year-old graduate from University of
California, Berkeley. He resides in the Bay Area. This is his first play.

I saw the play last night, they did a wonderful job choosing the cast members :)

hey i was at the oakland showing sunday and enjoyed it! Very funny...and I thought It was LONG>..of course as a reading they are testing the play out and planning on cutting it down but still...3 hours is a bit long...

I liked the daugther, dada ji, eldest son....the most...the mom and dad were good but at times a bit over..the youngest son was too monotone

Lemme know if they need any in the middle east in the furture.
