I thought it was crystal clear, All of you watch the same channels people in pakistan watch.

Anyway here is the “SOS” for all of you

Pakistan need Tents in large quantities !!!

There are literally no tents left in pakistan, Everyone, working in AJK , NWFP on every channel is asking for tents. There is desparate need of tents in those areas to provide shelter to millions of people who are left homeless.

Then there is need of Water. But thank God there is plenty of it in Pakistan

There is NO Need of food and cloths medicine for the time being.

They are asking for tents and they are not getting it in sufficient quantities. :frowning:

If you are in contact with people who are arranging stuff, please bring it into their notice :flower2:

ced red, I had posted information about sourcing tents earlier. reposting it here, this has been provided to numerous agencies and NGOs now.

its very tough for ppl to buy tents and send it, better to donatwe to groups that are getting tents, not only are they able to get volume breaks, but it makes it much easier logistics wise for a group to get a shipment of thousand at one time and get it over to the needed areas, rather than a mismash of tents coming in every day.

The tents needed have to be large and waterproof, usual small camping tents although better than nothing and useful for immediate needs would not work as anything more than a very immediate need solution. I would advise all of you to donate to groups which are collecting funds for tents.

I had been asked by several groups to find information on chinese tent manufacturers. It appears that the local market in Pakistan is empty, the supplies have not kept up with the need so NGOs working in this area are struggling to get the tents.

Its very expensive to buy and ship tents from here. I have worked with my contacts in China to get a list of manufacturers in different provinces. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone that you know is looking for such supplies.

For your information, normally, the import and export business in China will need open L/C instead of wireless transferring money. My contacts have advised me to get a contract signed before payment is made.

The Sydney morning Herald had an article on this yesterday.

According to it the Pakistan Army has thousands of tents & tinned food & biscuits, but it does not want to use these.

Also that, Pakistan is one of the biggest manufaturers of tents in the world, yet the Pak government is still allowing them to Export, to keep upto their commitments.

If this is true, somebody up there, has their priorities all mixed up.

Pakistan as one of biggest manufacturer of tents? Thats a first ever news to me, I’ve NEVER seen a tent in US which said “Made in Pakistan”, all I see is “Made in China”.

There is also need of sleeping bags- Karachi market atleast has no sleeping bags any more-

About tents-

The word is Pkaistani manufacturers can still cater the demand but are willing to do so-
we have contracted a lahore contrator for making tent for us and he is doing this --

We learneach day about how high/low a person can go
2 days back we contracted a karachi manufacturer for supplying us tents - he agreed at a price of Rs.3,000/- per piece- but next day refused to give this on agreed price-not even at Rs.7,000/- each-
Anyother contrcter my friends contacted supplied us some 100 tents free of cost

Even if Pakistan IS the biggest manufacturer of tents in the world, the governement can't just stop those from being exported and start using it themselves. The manufacturers have to hold true to their end of the bargain.

URGENT

If any group you know have some tents or * tirpal * for earth quake victims and wish to be guided/given location of most affected needy areas please contact Mr Rashid zamir in ISlamabad- cell # 0321-5005023 or Mr Aabid cell # 0300-9704480---- Give them the reference of Zia - karachi
Latest is that rain has again started in the area- and there are many areas where still no shelter is available and no aid is reached there- My friends there have survyed the area and know exactly where it is needed the most- They will in most cases give you the location of the area- and can help you in transportation also-

Please act now- it is the time they need it most-

Any one in karachi want to contact me- can PM me for my NUmber

I will inshallah give the details of these areas as soon as the list becomes available- for now- most of these workers are busy in arranging the aid

If you can not help this way- then dont forget to pray for these muslims- they are in trouble and need your prayers the most

On second & third para it states'One may well ask why the seventh largest army in the world is holding its hand out for helicopters and tents when Washington has supplied dozens of helicopters since september 11 and the country is one of the largest tent makers in the world.

The army itself holds thousands of tents in stock, along with tens of thousands of tins of foodstuffs and blankets, which do not seem to have been released'.

there are diff types of choppers, many are not suitable for relief operations
tents from military have been released. This is fairly common news.. the disaster teams in the front lines have been moving those exact tents to the needed areas.

pakistan may have one of the largest tent industries, but the tents that are needed need to be water proof, room sized tents. The tents being made in Pakistan are simply not the type that work well in a damp cold area. there is a very limited inventory of the tents that can be used. a typical shaadi shamiaana, or thetents Pakistan exports to saudi arabia for hajj stuff will simply not do.

Ahmed rashid needed to do just a little bit more research. I have personally spoken to Pakistani tent manufacturers, and relief agencies in the region. The issue is the number of available tents that are needed. For solving that issue, many agencies have been lookign to chinese manufacturers, which is something I have personally being engaged in. Had Ahmed Rashid done the same he would not be talking out of his bung hole.

Malhot according to news all the reserved tents in Army’s possesion have been supplied but the need is of much higher.

Army’s tents are for the army, in case they go on war etc, even if they have double the quantity of their need, here we r talking about a much much higher number of ppl, millions of ppl.

I m not sure if pakistan is one of the major manufaturers of tents but even if Pakistan is, those r not being manufactured for pakistan and we dont have stocks. Just today i saw pics in news paper alot of tents being stiched for the relief.
