Sorma/Kajal

What the difference between Sorma and Kajol, and how do you apply them properly.
I know Sorma is for inside your eyes. Does it spread if you wear it all day?

hayayyyy what a lovely thread :k: i LOVE kaajal/soormah

Hmm…lets ccc

soorma n kajal are different…

SURMA is just ASH…

and KAJAL is when you add some lubricant [usually oil or some ppl put ghee] in that ash…very little…

whether it spreads or not depends from person to person n things like weather, how oily ur skin is, etc etc…plus if you cry or when u do wuzu or wash your face it spreads coz its not waterproof…

you can apply them using a small TEELI…thin stick that is very smooth (so it doesnt hurt the eye) and pointed (but not sharply) towards the end…usually plastic or metal…some ppl even use tooth picks for this purpose…

soorma usually is put in a SOORMA DAANI…a small PEETAL or STEEL container that has a very small opening at the top and the applying stick as the lid…

yes soormah is only for inside eye but kajal can also be used as eye liner so u can use it outside the eye too…

the correct way to apply soormah is to dip the strick in the soormah, put it right above your lower eyelid inside your eye, so one of its ends touches the end of your eye thats closer to your nose bridge, and then to close your eyes and pull the teeli horizontally away from your nose so that the teeli goes across your eye…

for kajal, you can use this method for inside eyes or just apply it by pulling your lower eyelid below using your index finger of the left hand [if u r a righty] and then applying the kajal with a teeli using the right hand…

usually in pakistani culture ppl put soormah in the eyes of babies to save them from buri nazar [evil eye]…it is also said that wearing soormah is SUNNAH of the Holy Prophet Hz Mohammad (sa)…

and for grown ups too..

plus applying soormah, kaajal is considered to increase the attraction of your eyes and face…it is a very traditional makeup item for ladies  in fact men use this too…but the trend for men to use it is ending, specially in the cities, its considered too old fashioned or ‘paindooish’ ..how sad :frowning: …even ladies are switching to eye liner coz its more manageable and water proof too…

applying some soormahs and kaajals made from specific herbs are supposed to be good for your vision according to HAKEEMS [desi medicine practitioners]…

however these days there is talk going on abt how kajal and surmah can cause eye cancer..

Allah o Alim…

khayr…hope this helps

Irem bajii where did you hear that from?

irem don’t know about kajal but wearing surman (collerium} doesn’t cause eye cancer, wearing surmah was the sunnat {practice} of the holy prophet hazrat mohammed :saw:

let uz chat bro you are prolly right :) i just heard that it does so was passing on the info :)

belle, a lot of ppl say that yaar...like for example these days a lot of mothers dont put soorma in their babies' eyes coz of this...pata nai if its true or not tho...

Sahar kajal is the desi thing while eye liner is more like the modern version...plus i might be wrong but unlike kajal, liner isn't oil based...is it?

TJ yaar dont know for sure...

I don't know. A lot of the eye liners I've used in the past say kajol on them. But I don't know the ingredients.

:salam:

Surma is a sunnat of Hazrat Muhammad :saw: and is actually very good for the eyes but you have to be careful that you are buying the proper stuff because the ones you get from the stalls at the Pakistani bazaar usually have a lot of crap mixed into them.

I think it looks really good and natural on women, men and babies, brings noor (glow) to the face.

Allah Hafiz

Thanks irem for that :)

Is it normal for people to mix kajol n ghee? i dont think it's good for the eyes..
so kajol is like ur normal eyeliner..but a desi one..

irem i think u r right :-/

Keep away from kohl – and keep kohl away from kids!
One color additive of particular concern is kohl. Also known as al-kahl, kajal, or surma, kohl is used in some parts of the world to enhance the appearance of the eyes, but is unapproved for cosmetic use in the United States. Kohl consists of salts of heavy metals, such as antimony and lead. It may be tempting to think that because kohl has been used traditionally as an eye cosmetic in some parts of the world, it must be safe. However, there have been reports linking the use of kohl to lead poisoning in children.*

An FDA Import Alert cites three main reasons for detaining imports of kohl:

For containing an unsafe color additive, which makes the product adulterated.
For labeling that describes the product falsely as “FDA Approved.”
For lack of an ingredient declaration.
Some eye cosmetics may be labeled with the word “kohl” only to indicate the shade, not because they contain true kohl. If the product is properly labeled, you can check to see whether the color additives declared on the label are in FDA’s list of color additives approved for use in cosmetics, then make sure they are listed as approved for use in the area of the eye.
