Sore Throat and COKE...

I have a sore throat and my husband and banned me from drinking Coke bcos he says it makes it worse. I think he means any fizzy drink. Who can tell me if this is true???

I have secretly been drinking it anyway and I can’t really tell if it makes a difference.

yes i think he is right

Re: Sore Throat and COKE...

no idea tbh.. carbonated fluid shouldnt be the cause for a sore throat.. the cause is usually a gap in the immune system or an infection

but nonetheless, coke wont make you feel better, so avoid drinking it anyway

Re: Sore Throat and COKE...

It should be OK to drink, as long as the Coke is at room temperature

I didn't drink any today, and the throats much better... But now i have seen this thread and it reminded me I want some coke again...

Re: Sore Throat and COKE…

Cold fluids actually can help slow down the growth of virus/bacteria/germ whichever is causing that sore throat. Why do you think the virus/germs/bacteria or other stuff is kept in fridge or freezer ? To slow down their growth and multiplication.

It is a desi myth that cold fluids, ice cream , sour stuff is bad for you when you have sore throat and they also think these things are a cause of sore throat.

^ Have green tea with honey.. say no to coke!

Re: Sore Throat and COKE...

green tea is not too great when some one has sore throat.

Re: Sore Throat and COKE...

Sore throat is caused by many reasons.

One of them is virus infection and other is acid reflux from stomach.

Coke with caffeine in it can make reflux worse and besides simple hydration, steam inhalation, bed rest, Vitamin C, avoiding very cold drinks and too much talking nothing else really helps.

Re: Sore Throat and COKE...

Hmm, my mum insists on drinking ice cold water for sore throats. Anyway, mine got 80% better after 2 days of coke avoidance, however, i drank some last night without thinking about it and then the sore throat flared up again, so with that i conclude that Coke may contain something that can b an irritant for my sorethroat.

If u people want to help me in my quest to know if Coke really affects sorethroats, please drink some after u get a little better n c if it makes it worse.

Thank u kindly.

Not a fan of coke, but I really like Pepsi. I try to avoid drinking soda on a regular basis. But when I'm sick with a sore throat............it is Pepsi that I crave most. Other sodas are fine as well, but that's my first preference. I know some people crave comfort foods such as pasta, cookies, and soup when they're ill.....but I'd rather have my ice-cold Kaala Pani, LOOL.

A friend of mine believes that it's the bubbles in the soda that temporarily calm the throat and settle the stomach. I think she might be right, cuz I find it soothing.

Hmmmm......after my previous post, I just realized something. When you have a cold/sore throat, doctors avoid you to drink plenty of fluids......fluids that hopefully are hydrating. Well, I remember learning that sodas are dehydrating. I've even read that for every can of soda you drink, you need to compensate it with 2 glasses of water. So, could the dehydrating effect of soda be causing the sore throat to become worse, as it depletes your body of water......which helps carry essential nutrients that could help heal the throat inflammation. Hmm, I wonder?

I've heard doctors in middle-east advise their patients to avoid consuming yogurt and ice-cream when sick. I never understood why until recently. Consumption of dairy products actually causes phlegm/mucous to become thicker, which can result in delayed healing of congested chest/cough.

Dunno about colds, but coke in general is terrible, stay away from it!
