What is the historical background of this bifurcation?

Is this categorization still followed?

Which tribes, clans, etc are Sooraj Vanshi and which are Chandra Vanshi?

Suryavanshi and Chandravanshi are clans of Kshatriyas in India, though most of the Rajputs are Sooryavanshi, Yadavs are Chandravanshis.

In reality no one is decendent of Surya or Chandra, all her Bandarvanshi :D

so these Vanshis are actually cousins.

Lineage wise both are two distinct ones, by occupation, they were same, and yes due to intermarriage they were cousins. and cousins don't intermarry in Brahmins and also in many other hindu communities
