Sonia Naz

I dont know if this is the right forum. Ive been following Sonia’s story for a while. The story has a different twist and turn each day. Initially i viewed the situation as hopeless, cuz where an SP Khalid Abdullah is the man accused, a swift cover up is more than likely. However, when her husbands comes out of hiding and speaks out in support of Sonia, things suddenly begin to look up…until that is, her inlaws turn both her and her children out as they try to distance themselves from the media and protect their so called honour. Soon however, Supreme court takes on the case, and there is still some hope for justice, but what little there was, is marred as sonia’s husband files for a divorce under family pressure, leaving her on her own to seek justice. This, despite the fact she entered the parliament in the first place, merely to secure his release.

Sonia’s husband sends in divorce
By Rauf Klasra
ISLAMABAD: Beleaguered Sonia Naz received another bolt from the blue yesterday. Only this time, it came from a man for whom she had staked her honour and even life – husband, Asim Yousaf.

He sent in his divorce. Sonia received a message Monday from her absconding husband that he was divorcing her as he “could not live with a woman about whom print media has been publishing stories for the last two weeks”.

Asim conveyed the message to Sonia residing, at Dastak Lahore, through her younger sister. He said he had taken the decision in consultation with his family members.

Earlier Sonia had sent a message to her in-laws that she along with her children wanted to live with them and they should take her from the shelter house.

Asim claimed he was under pressure from his parents and was forced to divorce her to thwart harmful affects of her episode on his married and unmarried sisters.

“From whom should I get justice for all that happened to me and this time no-one else but my own husband has wronged me. What is my fault,” asked a devastated Sonia while talking to The News on phone.

She further said, “When I recount what happened to me in last five months, I cannot believe that this is happening to me. First, I lost my husband to police, then I was arrested in the National Assembly, put in Adiala jail for three days, abducted, tortured and raped by cops, driven out of my in-laws house, forced to work as a domestic servant to earn for my kids and, now this. It is hard to believe I am the same girl who was living a very normal life only last year after marrying Asim. I wonder what more is in store for me?” Sonia said.

In a strange move, Asim also sent photocopies of Urdu newspaper reports about their portrayal of Sonia’s character to justify his decision to divorce her.

“I feel I have lost everything after getting a message of divorce from my husband, someone for whom I struggled for a year and suffered enormously in the process,” a sobbing Sonia said.

She said, "Whatever happened to me was the direct outcome of an year’s persistent efforts to get the father of my two kids released from illegal custody. Now, the same man for whom I suffered so much has decided to desert me in this world and our kids.

“Where will I go? I cannot even get a job to earn bread for my children because everyone knows that Sonia is a raped woman”.

Of reports in the vernacular dailies, she said, “I am amazed to read stories about my past life and wonder what have I done to deserve this?”

She said she was an educated person, who believed in fighting injustice. "That was why, I decided to take on the cops when destroyed my family. But, now I am being taught a lesson by the society and media for breaking my silence against those who dishonoured me.

"I never expected all this, particularly from Asim, for whom, I did everything conceivable to get him justice.

Despite paying millions of rupees to the police, Asim could not win freedom. I had absolutely no idea that one day he, too, would leave me at a stage when I was taking shelter in Asma Jehangir’s Dastak – away from my children who are being taken care of by my mother and sister," Sonia said.

She said, “Asim might have accepted me even after the rape as he was initially convinced this was not my fault. Rather, he used to consider himself responsible for this tragedy. But, ever since the slander campaign against my character started making the rounds, he seems to have been misled and decided to leave me,” Sonia said.

Sonia said the most painful thing for her was that Asim did not even wait for the outcome of the case she was pursuing to get justice.

"All government functionaries do is to come and partake photo-ops. I am living like a prisoner in Dastak as 20 cops are guarding me round the clock.

Even women police constables sleep in the same room where I go to bed. They don’t even allow me to go to the bathroom on my own. I cannot meet my family. My children are away from me. I am sick of every thing," said Sonia totally exasperated.

‘Let Pakistan know what happened to me’

Re: Sonia Naz

wow.

Re: Sonia Naz

This is so sick...

And what's worse is - what can we do for her? Tauba hai. Her husband is such a LOSER.

Re: Sonia Naz

Idea - most of us are in the US or some european country or the other. If we can write letters to major magazines and newspapers to cover this story in detail...

maybe it can turn into the next Mukhtaran Mai case...

Maybe that SOB rapist, even if he's a gov't wala, can get hung or something.

Oh, the hope...the hope...

Re: Sonia Naz

I was wondering earlier if there was anyway we could help her or atleast send her a message of support. Thats the least we can do. The jang/ The NEWS is covering this story from day to day, maybe we can contact her through them?

In the mean time, contacting local/national news would help to raise the profile of the case. No western newspaper is covering this at all, its been high profile in pak a for quite a while.

Re: Sonia Naz

theres a lot of coverage in the media as it is, and turns out thats what caused the divorce. i have no idea what can be done, the president intervened here, and still we have this stupidity

Re: Sonia Naz

How can divorce be an issue when she has gone through rape and abduction...?

You gotta be kidding me...why not investigation on rape and police brutality...?

Re: Sonia Naz

Ravage, media was one of the reasons the government stepped in and got her out of jail. It also brought her husband back into the public. He was framed falsely for something and was forced to go into hiding by the SP khalid Abdullah (after paying up millions), it was one of the conditions of his release. His whole family were on the run. Pretty soon, sonia's parents were too. SP khalid Abdullah has been suspended since, turns out he was removed for corruption a whileback, but then reinstated by some bigger moron. Theres a whole lot more to this story, we're just scratching the surface here.

Re: Sonia Naz

Man with a Plan, there is still hope the gov. and court processes will get Sonia justice like they did with Mukhtaran Mai. However, her husband was her only support and life line at this time. Its ironic the person she went through all this crap for, has left her and her kids in the midst of it. I cant comprehend it at all.

Re: Sonia Naz

another proof of the stupid judicial system in pakistan....

i someties wonder if those courts in pakistan have been able to provide justice to even a single victim....

Re: Sonia Naz

PCG.. I’m with you on this one… just reading the above article made me so sick !!! but then just makes you think how many other women have gone thru the same thing… :frowning:

Re: Sonia Naz

A nation that allows this to go without a peep does not deserve to exist.

Re: Sonia Naz

Sad and disgusting. May Allah (SWT) grant her patience and justice and make it easy for her and her kids, ameen.

Horrible husband and in-laws. Hope they pay the price for it.

Re: Sonia Naz

Talk bad about the event and condemn the wrongdoers… not the nation please.

Re: Sonia Naz

deedawar, spot on :k:

This story is so disheartening, I wish we could do something for this girl. She’s left in the admist of nowhere in this situation, na idhar ki na udhar ki. She’s probably much better without the sorry ass of a loser who couldn’t stand up for her while she went thru hell to save him. I hope he pays dearly for it.

I had the misfortune of having a conversation with a fellow pakistani guy who said MukhtaraN Mai’s case came to the scale it did, for money. I was so angry I could hardly contain myself. I’m so glad MukhtaraN Mai came forward with this, paving a way for other women to bring to light the injustices done to them.

Re: Sonia Naz

Now if Sonia Nawaz asks the gov't to let her move to another country and to facilitate that process, I will not blame her the slightest bit.

Re: Sonia Naz

shes way tooooooooooo gooooood for him! A ***like that doesnt deserve her!

Re: Sonia Naz

Can anyone fill me in on her complete story ? Her husband needs to grow some balls and get some REAL HONOR and respect. Leaving your wife like that is the lowest of low things to do.

Re: Sonia Naz

I wonder what nugget of wisdom would come of Mushy? Visa ploy, talk show contract....

Re: Sonia Naz

The problem here is that we can not keep handling these gross violations of justice on an ad-hoc basis, fire a few corrupt officers, suspend some other jackasses who did nto do anything about it, slap on te wrist for other karta dhartas. Evidene has shown that when it comes to police and civil services in pakistan, corruption and lawlessness is rampant.

Their has to be a full scale cleanup, and yes it will take some time, but it needs to be started in a visible manner so morons like these cops leave due to a forced attrition due to tighter checks and balances.

the cops involved in this need to be fried, and the ladys husband is a loser of the highets degree.
