Son Of Hamas' Founder Fed Information To Israel For 10 Years

I wonder what his views are on recent destruction in Gaza.

Son Of Hamas’ Founder Fed Information To Israel For 10 Years

For nearly 10 years, Israel had a top informant in one of the most unlikely places – the family of one of the co-founders of the Palestinian organization Hamas.

Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hamas leader Sheikh Hassan Yousef, worked with agents from Israel’s intelligence agency Shin Bet from 1997 to 2007. The new documentary “The Green Prince” highlights his journey from deep within the ranks of Hamas to working with Israel.

Yousef joined HuffPost Live on Friday to discuss his exceptional life story. Yousef told Josh Zepps that as a child, just like thousands of other Palestinians, he blamed Israel for the poverty and violence around him. It wasn’t until he spent over a year in an Israeli prison and was exposed to Hamas brutality that he began questioning his upbringing.

“Hamas people were torturing other Hamas members for suspicion of collaborating with Israel,” Yousef said. “When I saw Hamas’ brutality, I decided basically to question the nature of the movement and this was the beginning of a new journey … working with Israel to save human lives.”

Gonen Ben Itzhak, an Israeli security agent who worked with Yousef until eventually being fired for breaking protocol, also joined the conversation. He explained to Zepps that Israel had long been looking for someone within Hamas to collaborate with.

“We had a goal, and the goal was to stop killing .. We didn’t understand Hamas at the time, we didn’t know how it works, we didn’t know know Hamas’ secrets,” Itzhak said.

In “The Green Prince” Itzhak explains the difficulty of recruiting informants, of convincing someone to betray his own people.

As Yousef fed Israel information, he said his main objective was “to save human lives.”

“Whenever I had information about a suicide bomber, trust me, I did not hesitate a second to work very hard to stop a suicide bomber before they reached their target,” he said. “Suicide bombers did not kill only Israelis and themselves, they killed all types of people. They were against humanity.”

Yousef, who converted to Christianity, left for the United States in 2007. His book about his life and time as an informant came out in 2010.

I am extremely proud of him for that. I may not agree with him converting to Christianity, but he did great in saving thousands of innocent lives.

Hamas leader disowns son - World news - Mideast/N. Africa - Israel-Palestinians | NBC News

ERUSALEM — A senior Hamas leader publicly disowned his son Monday, days after the young man announced he had secretly spied for Israel and helped authorities hunt down members of the Islamic militant group.
Hamas Web sites published a letter late Monday by Sheik Hassan Yousef that the militant group said was smuggled out of the Israeli prison where he is serving a six-year sentence.
In the letter, he said his family announced its “complete renunciation” of Mosab Yousef. The father said he was sorry to take such a step but said he had no choice after his son “disbelieved in God…and collaborated with our enemies,” he said.
The elder Yousef, who helped found the militant Islamic group two decades ago, was humiliated last year when his eldest son announced he had converted to Christianity. Then the son told an Israeli newspaper last week that he had helped Israeli intelligence foil militant attacks and hunt down Hamas leaders — including his father.
Mosab Yousef told the Haaretz daily said he spied for Israel for a decade before fleeing to California in 2007. Mosab Yousef is publishing a memoir, “Son of Hamas.”
Monday’s announcement means the family now considers their son to have never existed. He loses his inheritance and the family will never speak to him, or about him, again.
Palestinians, much like Arab communities across the region, are typically deeply private and try to conceal damaging family fissures. Only in very rare cases do families publicly renounce their children — usually when a son or daughter has done something in public that the family considers deeply humiliating.
In his book, Mosab Yousef claims he was considered one of the Shin Bet security agency’s most valuable assets and was dubbed “The Green Prince,” a reference to his Hamas pedigree and the Islamists’ signature green color.
The claims have exposed a new side of the Islamic militant’s vulnerability, coming in the wake of the assassination of a top Hamas operative in Dubai in January.
Israel has not commented on Yousef’s claims, or on widespread speculation that it carried out the Dubai assassination.

I don't think that was all he was doing. He did lot more than including helping Israelis capture his own father who is now in jail.

Destroyed his akhirah for petty duniya.

Was he getting "rewarded" in one way or another for passing information? what was his motive?

I have seen people doing right things for wrong reasons many time.
