Some very basic questions

All you stock market gurus, I call upon you to help me understand some basic things, please!

What does ‘volume’ means in stock market …I had a look at say 20 companies there were few with a volume listed as 300- 400 n many with a 0 (zero) volume …what does this mean??

What does ‘YTD’ stand for…??? All stocks had a column where ‘YTD’ was listed…Shares going down mostly had a YTD in minus…but I couldn’t figure out what is it exactly.

What are ‘Quotes’ in stock market???

Oh n then thewre are some shares which are marked with ‘N/A’ in bidding price column…does that mean these are only foir long term investment n not day trading..???

Plus Whats a W-8BEN form??

Thank you in advance!

Re: Some very basic questions

If I am not wrong, YTD is "Year to date".

Re: Some very basic questions

hain???

Michellin's YTD is -3,02

what does that mean ???

Re: Some very basic questions

YTD (Year-to-date) : Performance. Return which is capital appreciation/(Loss) and any current income (dividends/interest) that is earned in a calendar year.

Volume pertains to the number of shares traded on a particular instrument.

Re: Some very basic questions

It means the performance of the share to date, since the start of the year. Minus means it has fallen in relation to its price last year. For eg. If the share closed last year at $100 and is now trading at $90 its YTD performance for the year will be -10%

^
Thanks! got it now!:)

But what about last three questions....??? Any help??

Re: Some very basic questions

Volume means the number of shares traded, both bought and sold. Share with 0 volume means the share did not trade at all. Such shares are usually very illiquid and would normally have a very wide bid and ask. Stay clear of such shares.

Quotes is the bid and ask of the share. For eg a share might be bid $10 ask $10.50. What it means is that the market maker will buy the share off you at $10 if you want to sell and sell it to you at $10.50 if you wish to buy.

No idea what a W-8BEN form is.

Hope it helps.

Re: Some very basic questions

W-8BEN = This form is used by non-resident students to claim a tax treaty exemption for a scholarship. In general, scholarship or fellowship pay to a non-resident person is subject to federal income tax withholding . However, a non-resident personwho qualifies** **to claim a tax treaty can avoid withholding by filling the W-8BEN form. (Exclusively for the US).

Re: Some very basic questions
