Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

Lately, I have been reviewing some essays for college going kidos and have come across some silly mistakes.

Please avoid using the spellcheck on your software. Go over each line yourself. Example: Some people use “then” instead of “than” and because both words are spelled correctly, the spellcheck on the computer doesn’t identify it as an error. Another example, “there” and “their.” Even the grammer feature doesn’t pick these up.

Know how to use your punctuation. Avoid using commas all over the place. The best way to figure out when to put a comma is to speak the sentence aloud. Insert a comma when you make a brief pause.

Follow a consistent style. The essay should be visually pleasing as well. Some people have different indentations at the start of paragraphs.

Complete your sentences and avoid using gonna wanna when writing. Also know when to use plural.

Good pointers Niksik... I often smack my head coming across the silliest of mistakes.

I would however not go as far as suggesting to avoid the spell and grammar check tool in a word processor, but I'd certainly advise not to depend on it.
Ideally, this should be the preliminary tool to weed out the more obvious and glaring errors, and it should be followed by proof reading on your own. Finally, depending on how important the document it, it helps to get someone else to proof read for you as well... sometimes, you're too close to your own work and can't catch all the mistakes.

Yes, I should have written that use the spell/grammar check tool in addition to your own proofing.

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

after writing your essay, dont start proofreading right-away. do give some rest to your eyes before doing so.

and read it aloud.

ps. i really respect those ppl who start their assignment one or two weeks before the actual assignment is due (cuz it gives u more time for editing) :(

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

There aren't that many people like that Zobs. Most people are struggling for time these days.

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

**I **had 40 out of 50 marks in essay writing in CSS exam, does that make me an essay writer?

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

^ lol ya…but might not a best one :hehe: (lagta hai app nay theek thaak CSS waloon k damag ki chutni baneyee thee :hehe: )

cuz anyone who writes essay is an essay writer :stuck_out_tongue:

ps. chach…i atleast do aware of one person who starts his/her work a week before the actual thing is due :hayaa: :mash:

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

^ In fact I was the "best one" at that time, more so one can't write a book when tested for essay writing. it will be a recipe of "failure".

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

i was being sarcastic on "might not the best one". so chill!

Zobia, I am never upset, trust me on that.

Re: Some tips on proofreading essays, etc.

^ lol, ok

back to the topic...one thing i dont understand are the research based essays...aint thats stating someone else's POV, and backing it up again and again with someone else's POV

so whats a point to writing someone elses POV, which they already described in a way better way than mine.

I
t is only a matter of having an opportunity to conduct a research yourself, or voice your words of conformity. We would gleefully accept a belief that either resonates or can co exist with our belief and would not shy away from rephrasing it in our own words when required.

I don't believe that I know a specific background of your concern, I have replied generally.
