Some Serious Advice Needed

Hi Guppans,

This site has honestly been really nice to me, and has given me all the advice I need in terms of wedding planning etc. So first off thank you, thank you, thank you! I just wanted a quick opinion on my bridal outfit. I got a hold of Dr Haroon and spoke to him over the phone. I read a lot about him on his thread (positive reviews that is) and love his work. Anyways, he asked me how tall I was etc etc and then recommended that I get a dhaka pajama outfit (for lack of better terms) and the cost would be around $5000. Okay now the dilemma, I know I can afford the outfit but I feel kind of guilty buying such an expensive bridal for one day. I dont know can you guys help me out here? Is it truly worth it? I have never seen a dr. Haroon in real life and I am sure his work is as amazing, but do you think opting for a nida azwer or sania maskatiya for about a $1000 less or so is worth it? Need your opinion pleaseeee!!

Thanks!

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

if your alternatives are only $1000 less, you might as well go with Dr. Haroon. Paying $4k is still in same high range. So I think you should only go with nida azwer or saniya if you think the outfit will be better.
If you feel guilty about spending that much on the outfit, maybe you can cut back on other areas of your wedding so that in the end your total costs are manageable.

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

agree with marigold. $1000 isn't that much of a difference in this case so get what you'll love more. I share your feeling about spending so much on a dress only to wear it once (even though my dress is going to be a lot cheaper than yours :P), so I'm planning to convert it into formals after the wedding. Maybe you can do that too, get more use out of it that way. btw, congrats on the wedding :)

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

Thanks guys. Yeah I already have started cutting back on other wedding costs. To be quite honest, I never realized how expensive weddings can get in North America. I mean its crazy how much videographers and photographers and other vendors ask for nowadays. I think the one thing I always thought about was that my outfit should be perfect and the photographer should be great. I never cared enough about the video as much and neither other small aspects of the wedding (other than food cause thats what people ALWAYS remember)

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

Did you go with Dr Haroon?
When is the wedding?

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

Hey,

No I did not! He told me that a dhaka pajama would be around 5 lakhs - with not so heavy kaam. So I figured, to look around some more. I didnt go to Pakistan personally so I was looking for a designer that would be willing to communicate well with me over the phone. I ended up going for Layla Chatoor. She went way beyond my expectations!!! My wedding is in August and I will be posting pictures of it once they come out. But thank you all none the less for your advise :)

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

All the best w the wedding?
Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

Really? I have seen "not so heavy" Dr. Haroon bridals and they are still very heavy and amazing. But I am sure you will be happy with your choice too :)

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

That was the issue - I dont know what he meant by heavy versus light. I was coordinating everything from Canada - so its really hard to imagine something when they explain it simply over the phone. With all the wedding expenses piling up - I just felt like that even that 1-2 thousand dollars could be used towards the honeymoon or something else tangible like a TV. So I went with Layla. I will defintely post pics next month :)

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

I'd been curious about what this looks like since your first post as I've never heard the term before. What does a dhaka pajama outfit look like? (Before anyone says it, yes, I googled image-d it. However, it showed quite a few different outfits and hence, my question. )

*Apologies in advance for the dumb question :D *

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

Dhaka pj: Think straight cut, very wide legs pants. Personally I don't like them- if the material is too stuff it looks sort of ridiculous and if it's too soft then it looks shabby IMHO. A gharara is a much better alternative I think.

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

:biggthumb: I LIKE THIS SITES TOO

Re: Some Serious Advice Needed

I would have gone with Dr. Haroon.

based on personal experience, I tried the short cut method and had someone I knew try to make a copy and she failed miserably. In the end I had 2 months sitting in the states trying to either find someone to make a decent outfit in Pakistan or fly to chicago / New Jersey and find a wedding dress.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten my bridals from Dr. Haroon. I didnt want a really heavy bridal - I wanted 2 heavy formals and we had agreed to 2K for each formal and I backed out.

It still hurts to think about how potentially beautiful his outfits would have been… :bummer:
