Why do some people go to University then don’t get a job?
I have always been curious about it. I have seen dozens of people who go to University, finish their degree then don’t end up getting a job with it. I see them working on normal retail stores, supermarkets or any other similar places. And this isn’t temporary, this is pretty much permanent in a way and they work at these jobs for years.
Is it because its hard to find a job with these degrees? They study for own personal interest or they lose interest later?
Right now the job market is pretty bad and it has really done a number on new graduates. They need to do something to be able to pay off student loans, have health insurance, do something rather than sitting idle etc.
Other than that, and even aside from the current situation, what you study and where you study has an impact on how soon you can get into what you really want to do. Some decide on purpose to go in retail and build a career there to get into mgmt and then even regional retail mgmt roles.
Last you will see people in creative fields or liberal arts like drama and literature grads working in retail or restaurants while they working on other projects that may not pay enough.

All this scares me even though I am studying at University. I do think what will happen once I complete my graduation. Now I got it why UK government has increased the uni fees and bringing competition in education.
Economy is not going to stay bad forever, also look at what are the type of skills that will be in demand and make sure you have some alignment with it and you will be okay.

All the reasons stated by others are correct however, one major issue is the negativity with which anyone starts a job search.
