some more feeding issues

and so i am back.. hope i cant get some answers or any kinda help (some wonderful ppl have already given me some info in my blog, thanks ceebs and njgal)

so my son is 10 months. not a wondeful chewer. most of his food is mashed and ofcourse there is milk

so he doesnt know when he is full .. keeps feeding (usually his issue is with milk), and then throws it all up

so he overfeeds since he doesnt say no. i also dont have any kinda guideline as to how much i should be feeding him (other than milk, i know how much to give), cuz one day he is capable of drinking 4 oz milk, and eating a box of yoghurt as well as a fish kebab and then there are times when it will have been 2 hours since i have fed him and throw up on a 3 oz milk bottle… so i have nothing to go by on..

can anyone recommend any sites where i can find out just how much a baby of 10 month needs food wise?

any other tips will be hugely appreciated… cuz i am just out of my mind and pretty much done it all

oh the 3 hour break doesnt work for me cuz this is his schedule

wake up at 6, drink 4 oz sleep

wake up at 9, take 4 oz

porridge of some kind or toast or any other bfast at 10.30 or 11

nap time at 12

wake up at 2, lunch.

nap time at 4 with 4 oz bottle

wake up from nap at 6, dinner

bedtime at 9.30, 6 oz bottle.

as u can see, he is just not up for long enough to manage a 3 hour break in between .. i cant get solids and mikl in in just 2 hours.. i try but it gets ugly when he throws up…

HELP!

Re: some more feeding issues

Are you sure he's throwing up coz he over feeds. Could it be some other issues? Allerigies, stomach prob?

If you are sure it's coz he eats more than he needs, try to keep the portions of solids smalls for now. That's all I can think of. But if I were you, I would see a ped to look into other issues too, because from what you have said here, he doesn't seem to be over eating!

Re: some more feeding issues

Yep, go to a pediatrician and get him checked. He might have Acid reflux, from what I've heard its pretty common in infants.

k…here is a guide thats kind of long to read but has everything you would want toknow…

Re: some more feeding issues

bracelet and Mia: we thought it was reflux but its been ruled out. but i just dont see how a child can know its full at one feeding and properly let me know, and then forget at another feed and overfeed... it just doesnt make any sense.. ive asked around and he isnt eating huge portions.. what he is eating is perfectly normal sized feeds... but i have made an appt with my doc and i hope i can get things straight.. if nothing make her give me a feeding plan especially made fro my son .. cuz i am so done doign the math!

mama.. thanks for that .. it looks really informative.. i dont mind reading it.. for teh sake of the midget.. thanks a lot love

Re: some more feeding issues

You know it doesn't seem like a whole lot that he's eating. The schedule you have doesn't seem bad either. How much is he eating in terms of solids? It's not like you're overfeeding him milk, cuz 18oz seems pretty good. And you're right, you can't get milk and solids within 2 hours. I would leave at least an hour and a half to 2 hours between the two. So what consists of breakfast/lunch/dinner and how much?

ceebs.. i do wait for 2 hours before giving him anything ... if its nap time too soon and only an hour or hour and half has lapsed, then i cut down on the amoutn of milk i give him..

but for bfast he has egg yook with toast, or porridge or musceli( 4 tbsp) or toast with butter and maybe half a fruit

for lunch he will have any chopped veggy about 2 tbsp, some kinda meat or fish about 2 tbsp, and a baby yoghurt

for dinner he has any kind of porridge, about 4 tbsp .. i cant give him anything heavy for dinner cuz he sleeps bad then...

he takes 4 oz at 6 am, 4 oz at 6 am, 9 am, 12 pm, 4 pm and then 6 oz when going to bed.. but the last feed depends on how late he had dinner.. i only give 6 oz if its been 3 hours.. otherwise its 4 or 5 oz

i think its reasonable what he has.. infact its not as much as i have seen some babies eating or having ... and i dont know.. but i feel like his appetite is for more but he just cant handle it

Re: some more feeding issues

Personally, I think he's on a good diet and feed schedule for his size and age. Maybe try cutting it down to 1 tablespoon instead of 2 tablespoons at lunch time. But honestly, you know best. Trust your instincts.

You have probably already tried this .... but is he on regular milk or formula still? I am guessing formula ....

My pediatrician told me to give my son only 12-16 oz of milk per day since he is having 3 proper meals. More than that amount, he will feel full and not eat properly and/or throw up (according to what she said). Another thing that happened to a friend of mine, for some reason, he was not able to digest the milk. So she had to switch to organic milk. He isn't lactose intolerant or anything but regular milk just did not suit her son.

the issue is over here they are meant to be taking in 25 oz of milk in any shape... wether it be liquid milk, cheese, or yoghurt.

if it were leaving milk out to that low an amount, i dont think i would have issues with cramming solids and milk in teogether and he wouldnt throw up..

he is sitll on formula for acid reflux babies.. its speical by enfamil.. though i have started him on cows milk here and there since its suggested to make that move here, with babies from 9 months and up. but no moare than half a cup. so i cant use it for bottle feeding

1 tbsp of anything is not gonna fill him :D he will kill me

but i have realized that chunks of things dont make him throw up.. its liquidky stuff that can come up easily that does it for him....

and i just KNOW its somethin to do with reflux cuz sometimes he will act as if something has come into his mouth.. so he will make swallowing signs ...

Re: some more feeding issues

also mehnaz.. i would blame the milk but thats not the only time he throws up.. mashed fruit does it for him and at times even porridge... if he were throwing up after a certain kind of food everytime.. i wouldnt give it.. but he doesnt do that.. sometimes he does sometimes he doesnt.

i wonder if his gag reflex is still strong? i mean at times he will look at a spoon of food and gag.. after taht initial gag, he will go onto eat the whole meal! its soo soo odd

Re: some more feeding issues

kwateen, how did the doc rule out reflux? I repeatedly asked the doc when my guy was an infant and repeatedly told that he didnt have it because he didnt have the textbook symptoms. The only way to know for sure is to have an endoscopic test done or to treat for reflux to see if theres improvement.

It sure sounds like reflux to me but I'm not a doc. There is a muscle called the LES, its the muscle that opens to allow food to go into the stomach and then close tightly to keep it in there. When an infants LES muscle is weak, it opens up to allow food to splash back up into the throat and even the mouth. This causes pain and inflammation in the esophagus from the acid and eventually baby starts to refuse feedings because it makes them hurt.

Silent reflux is when there arent the typical symptoms like crying and back-arching. Its just that weak LES muscle allowing food to splash in the wrong direction. Thats what my son had.

Maybe take him back to the doc and insist on either the test or the treatment for reflux.

Best of luck!

Re: some more feeding issues

ya thats what im gonna do mama.. he just had a simple ultrasound done.. and they ruled out acid reflux like that.. but the doc did say it could be that. and then taht was it..

but i got relaxed too in the middle cuz he had stopped throwing up completely..

but it got back about a month ago.. been tryin to make an appt and finally got one for next week... lets hope i get some answers!

what u have described bout the muscle is what i was told ábout too in arabia (his throwing up started there)... doctors take things wayy more seriously there and do tests at the drop of a hat.. but unfortunately i had to come back to denmark so it got interuptted... but i think im back on track with getting him checked out again

thanks man!
