some ideas for lunch box

mehroo, your kids so cute :) telling you that you are giving him unhealthy food.

experiment a bit with food, try different brands of cheese, bread spreads, combine different food together, maybe get a cook book for snacks ect.. there are lots of variaty there but your kids seems to be eating the right things anyway.

thanks saadia :)
yeah i ll try to find a cook book for snacks .

mehroo......unfortunately i don't have much time now
i'll come back with my 2 cents soon......InshaAllah:)

Yesterday's leftovers - not joking!
anyway they will be cold by teh time he opens the lunch box.

hehe yeah i know that but thanks anyway .

Mehroo, about potato and peas kababs..i'll just give you a rough estimate..can't tell you naap taul..bus aap hisab say use kar lejiay ga..take 1/2 cup boiled potato..and 3/4 cup boiled peas..mash 'em together like bhurta..mix bhuna zeera (powder), thora sa dhania powder..thora chat masala..thora namak..thora chilli powder..and few croutons (make it like a powder thing)..and shape them like kabab..fry them or bake them..to make them crispy..you can roll them over an equal mixture of chips/corn flakes..and dip it in egg before frying..

Here's a recipe for green peas kachori..just to give you an idea..its from net..i do have potato kachori recipe in an urdu cooking magazine..but i don't have the time to translate it right now..

Ingredients:

1 cup flour(maida),
1/2 cup wheat flour(atta),
1 tbsp oil,
1/2 cup green peas,
1" ginger-paste
1 tbsp. aniseeds paste (saunf),
4 green chilies paste,
oil,
salt to taste

Method:

Heat oil in a pan, add the ginger paste, chilli paste and the aniseed paste. Fry this mixture for 2 mins, the add the green peas and salt. Cook this for 5 mins then allow it to cool. Next, you grind this peas mixture in a blender. Mix together the flours, oil and salt adding water till you form a smooth dough. Take a small ball of dough and roll it out, place little filling in the centre and close to form a pouch. Roll this out and fry like tiny pooris.

mehroo anty u can fidn as many different recipies u want but it will always be a head ache because kids will always be picky (i know cause i was one :stuck_out_tongue: and still am  ) in the end i started taking water, banana and apple :stuck_out_tongue:

good for u :halo: but mera beta kahnay ke mamlay meiN our bachoN ki tarah itnay nakhray nahiN kartaa maashAllaha …

Very nice ideas Qrius baji :k:

mehroo.......
:)
i don't know too many things for a lunch box but i can tell you what i have tried for my kids as mid morning snack or for afternoon

pasta.........with mince sometimes with chicken ......sometimes i add peas(boiled)..../sometimes even french fries too

blend some fruit n mix with yoghurt......no need to add sugar coz fruits r usually sweet..........but its your own choice .......fruit can be strawberry /apple/ banana /pear etc. .....you may add a bit of artificial colour to make its appearance nice ....but i prefer it otherwise

chaat ......not only chana chaay but u can make it with red beans .....or sometimes with corn.....!!!!
fruit chaat is also good but still its better to give whole fruit ..........as u know fruits tend to lose their vitamin content once they r cut.......but for the sake of variety u can try it

Qrius told you to give him samosas /vegetable rolls ........its really nice idea ......you can make changes in fillings ......kids like it that way .......like sometimes its vegetable filling .....sometimes chicken/mince........etc.

my kids love seekh kababs too......try it

as a kid i sometimes took with me dehi phulkiaan........or some leftovers like haleem or vege/chicken/mutton biryaani ......sometimes sandwiches filled with left overs like potato curry /mixed vege/qeema mattar

ammy is fond of baking .........so sometimes we had variety of cakes/biscuits or pizzas etc..as our lunch...........but personally i dont like to give my kids too many cakes/biscuits etc...........once /'twice in a month is ok .....i think

n what about bread rolls .......n well i forgot to mention chicken croquettes too ......actually my kids like these........mix boiled chicken(shredded) with boiled n mashed potatoes add salt n pepper ......actually you should add some white sauce too ....it gives a neat appearance .....but usually i'm in hurry so i just quit this step .....shape the mixture as you like .......apply some beaten egg n then roll in bread crumbs ......fry ........!!

rainbow/ribbon sandwiches were our favourite when we were kids......take four pieces of bread .......place egg n butter mixture on one clice .....mint chutney on second slice....n ketchup on third slice cover with 4th one n cut diagonally ........(i don't add ketchup for my kids ......they don't like it )

n by the way all times favourite for my kids is salad ........usually it is cucumber ,eisberg, tomatoes,n onions.........but u know u can produce an endless variety in salads .......like sometimes we add apples(sprinkle some lemon juice on apples to prevent the change of colour)......or sweet corns /carrots/boiled peas .......or you can use different dressings like olive oil+vinegar/lemon juise +mint etc etc ........

so far this is what i can tell you
hope it helps
:)

thanku so much afia for some great ideas :) my son dont like to take chats ,biryani ,dehi phulkiaan haleem or kebabs with in school as there can be problems for teachers and him as well coz such food will be cold by time so i prefer sanswich ,bread rolls, samoas , brown bread etc ...now i have got so many ideas and gonna try them all ...(chahey gaar meiN hee as snacks) thanku again

why not buy school lunch?

Re: some ideas for lunch box

Quiche quick easy and adaptable just add whateva he likes into it cooked meat veg etc

Puff pastry is nice with this but shortcrust is good too.

(buy ready made life is too short to be rolling things out like twenty times- i get tired of making roti evryday)

Line an oven proof dish (doesn't matter what shape- but not too deep) with the pastry.

*In a measuring jug break 4 (free range-

happy chicken) eggs
*make it up to the half pint with milk (full fat) or cream.

Add a bit of salt and pepper and pour into pastry lined dish.

Grate some cheese (strong cheddar works best) on top of the mixture.

Bake in medium hot oven (gas mark 5) for about 1/2 hour maybe a bit longer - until fully risen.

you can cut in pieces and freeze so its redy for other days. an it still tastes nice when its not hot as well.

i think my rozas gettin makru talkin about food man coz i is gettin too needy.

my favourite is red, yellow an green peppers, lots of cheese, onions, and spinach bit of chillipowder to kick it up a notch.

Re: some ideas for lunch box

Have you done a google search on Bento lunch boxes? There are some moms doing "bento inspired" lunches really really really cute things...and the kids are eating them up. Babycenter's bargains board has a few threads going with pics of various ideas and set ups.

Moms are putting rice in various shapes...cutting sandwiches with cookie cutters...doing wraps. V. cute..and loads of variety of lunch ideas.

Re: some ideas for lunch box

Because they are usually really high fat, prepared meats that are NOT healthy.
