My mum has got cracks at the tips of her fingers, at the side of her hand, and they’re very painful for her. I think its cos of the cold weather, have got some myself, but not as bad as my mum. she has tried using vaseline to soften the skin, but only uses it before sleeping cos during the day her hands get wet during wudu, during everyday house chores etc.
can anyone please recommend something that’ll make the cracks heal quickly and not re-open or be so painful? would really appreciate it.
This happens generally. Please ask your mum to apply coconut oil, mustard oil on the affected areas atleast thrice a day. Please aslo make sure that she drink proper amount of water everyday.
The cracks will go further deep which may result wounds and exposing them to air can result septic. Ask her to act faster.
this happens to me too. Skin on the tips of my fingers would peel off every fall/winters. Its painful. New skin replaces it though.. Just a weird thing. I usually use creams and lotions.
Get her some rubber gloves for dishwashing/chores etc.. or better yet help her out if you can :)
she does wear rubber gloves for things like washing dishes, ive told her to leave the dishes for me and i'll do them when i return from work, but she doesnt like mess! so often ends up doing them.

ok thankyou, i'll get her to try mustard oil/coconut oil, thanks :)
medical grade lanolin.
would my mum need a prescription to get this or is it available from any chemist?
why don't you take her to a doctor who can treat her condition. plz take her
no prescription needed for lanolin. any pharmacy/chemist should have at least a couple of brands to choose from. its very effective, and non-greasy once you wait a few mins after its been on your cracked skin. no one likes to walk around with oily fingers, trust me..
You can try olive oil. Wash skin with warm (not hot) water to open pores......and then massage gently with olive oil so that it is absorbed better by the skin (don't wash oil off). Eucerin lotion has worked for some people.
I know that people can get cracks at the corners of the mouth when they're deficient in vitamin B......so tell your mom to take a multivitamin daily.
If it doesn't get better, I'd advise consulting a doctor or dermatologist.
^ cracks on fingertips not corners of the mouth is being asked I think. Two different conditions.
Gloves and any oil or moisturizer on regular basis is fine for hands. Just keeping hands warm helps too. Wudu with good warm water and cover hands quickly.
Washing hands too many times should also be avoided. Soap may need to be changed as well.
I don't think a doctor is needed based on the question.

Yes, Diwanay Sahib, I am fully aware that Sazzie was asking about cracks on the fingertips and NOT the corners of the mouth. I only mentioned the cracks on the mouth because I thought that perhaps a vitamin deficiency MIGHT be a factor in cracked fingertips. Deficiency in vitamins can lead to dry skin. I'm not a doctor....I merely put out a suggestion. And there's no harm in taking a multivitamin for overall health.
I wouldn't recommend that she uses vaseline. It only offers a temporary effect and won't help to heal the cracks in her skin and as it isn't aqua (water) based it won't give her skin the moisture that it needs in this weather.
The body shop hemp hand protector is a product that is good for dry and damaged skin. Its main component is aqua. Your mum will see a difference overnight and with use over a few nights her hands will be as good as new, it is a bit smelly (smells quite medicinal in fact) but it works wonders :) It's also important that she protects her hands when washing up and avoids 'over washing' them in general.
Also - just an additional point, do you have the heating on quite high indoors in this weather? Try placing a plant near your radiator and this will help to maintain moisture in the air and cause less dryness in the skin.
