some forgotten players

Pakistan has a history of picking players out of nowhere, giving them a short stint and then dropping them off at the same place where they were picked up from. This has cost Pakistan dear for a long time now (not necessarily in this World Cup alone).

Some ones that I can remember:

Mohd. Wasim:

The guy had a very solid technique, looked very elegant too. Perhaps the most elegant batsman among the contemporary Pakistani bats save for maybe Saeed. He might’ve been too slow for ODIs but to be fair he never was given an extended run to let him adjust to the pace of the game. He comes to mind quickly because of our batting’s inability to occupy the crease, a feat that Wasim was quite adept at. The poor guy wasn’t given a shot in the middle order where he deserved to be and ended up opening for us just to be able to stay in the team. He also captained the A team extensively and Youhana played under him. When these two came together, Wasim was supposed to have much more potential. Youhana was fairly slow out of the blocks too. He dropped at least two sitters and converted them into sixes against India in the Independence Cup in Bangladesh; he cost us the match and eventually the tournament. Yet he found his composure eventually on the world stage. Makes me wonder if Wasim could have been the number 3 that we still seek had he be given the run that Youhana was.

Naveed Latif:

I have no idea why this guy was dropped. All I remember that he came into the team for a Sharjah cup and won us a match chasing 250+ along with Inzi. And then he’s nowhere close to the team. I’ve read about centuries that he’s supposed to be racking up in domestic and as part of the A team. It’s obvious the guy can blend aggression and defence as is required to execute a successful run chase. Still he finds himself out of the team. Does anyone know the reason why he was left out?

Imran Farhat:

All I hear is grand praise for this guy. He was brought into the team and then dropped without being given enough chances. How he was handled appears even more absurd when you consider that he was kept out of the team by Imran Nazir - the Afridi clone (minus the bowling). Imran Farhat was supposed to be too ambitious in his shot selection, then what was Imran Nazir. Nazir sneaks so often into the team despite having severe problems with his temperament.

please, post any others that you guys remember.

Misbah Ul Haq - he has an average of like 40 in ODI cricket.

Qaisar Abbas and Mohammad Hussain (or was it mahmood)....

both of them left hand batsman, middle order, and both slow left arm bowlers....
batting all-rounders, both....
we need such players in the team badly....

imran farhat is not even half as good as imran nazir....
imran nazir has got so many shots....
if he learns how to play inswingers and spin bowling, he cud be the best batsman pakistan ever had.... atleast the best opener....

wajahatullah wasti played in the previous wc. i remember he played well with saeed anwar in the last wc semi final vs new zealand.

slow player but can bring a lot of confidence to other batsman because they are able to play more freely with him being the good rotate player he can be

I remember one called Kabir he was a batsman don't know his specialities all I know is that he was good looking, that was good couple of years ago.

He was a bowler not a batsmen.

She might be talking about Shadab Kabir, the opener.

Hasan Raja - I think there was a lot of talk about him after the Australia series

Hasan Raza isn't forgotten. He'll be back as a test player once the WC is out of the way. I always thought Mohd Wasim was a good player - he did well in Australia but because he was an opener he couldn't get into the team because of the mighty Anwar/Sohail combo.

Xtreme, though I could be wrong I'm pretty sure that Wasim was a middle order batsman. When Anwar/Sohail were playing, he wasn't even vying for an opening spot. He started to open in Australia, I guess he was asked by the selectors to do so. He opened on and off as the scapegoat but he did start his career as a top middle order player.

does anyone else remember?

Yeah, Hasan Raza will be back hopefully. He has a bright future, Inshallah.

sam, you might be right, but in any case I think he got over-looked for the likes of Ijaz Ahmed which was a mistake. He played very straight and would have been good for the balance of our team I reckon.

Don't know much about Naveed Latif. Farhat is a very flashy stroke player whose well-rated in Pakistan. I wouldn't mind seeing more of him, he played a few spanking shots off the Aussies but he played and missed a lot as well. Needs to learn shot selection a bit like Nazir, another fine strokeplayer.

muhammed wasim great batsmen and also imran farhat.... misbah ul haq rox and naveed latif scored a great century!
but v dun have place to put them!

Imran Nazir

What happened to this young straight bat opener?. I remember Ian Chappel praising his technique and attitude at the wicket. He also hit centuroes on West Indian pitches. A lot better than Salim Elahi. And also an excellent fielder at point.

I have to say guys, I disagree about those batsman.

They were all given numerous amounts of chances, but they never took advantage.

One thing about Pakistani batsman is that they make entrance into the international arena with a huge BANG!
But they suddenly they quite down, as was the same case with all these young cricketers.

Mohammad Wasim- Very talented batsman, but his nervousness on the pitch what killed him. Forget one dayers, in test, he never looks like scoring runs. I haven't seen him in a long time, he may have changed his tactics with his experience in New Zealand domestic cricket.

Naved Latif- Sadly the guy was a good stroke maker but not a good executioner, was in the side against Bangladesh test and the Sharjah series, did well in the begining but just like others, started playing inconsistently.

Imran Farhat- Very entertaining batsman to watch, he has a open bat but sometimes got carried away with his shots, he was given chance during the Aussie test series but failed to make any impression.

Imran Nazir- The most talented of them all, his technique was right, but his temprement was awful, it was required of him to play every shot on the off side, and most of them resulting in inside edges.

You mean Hassan Raza

There was a good article on The News about two years back about one test wonders - batsmen who have been dropped after just one test match permenently… Alot of talent has been flushed down the toilet because of that.

Re: Re: some forgotten players

hmmm inswinginers and spin bowling is my problem too…
So i guess I could also join the Pakistan team… may be even the best batsman pakistan ever had…:rotfl"
