Some Fellowship Positions

Deadline approaches for fellowship at Oxford University

Dec 31, 2003
Mid-career print and broadcast journalists worldwide have until
December 31 to apply for a fellowship that could enable them to
study at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

The `New Journalism Fellowship" was established by the Germany- based Gerda Henkel Foundation in cooperation with the established
Reuters Foundation Program at Green College, Oxford University.

The fellowship offers a six-month study opportunity during the
2004-5 academic year to carry out research in any subject in the
fields of Art History, Modern and Ancient History, Legal History
or Islamic History. The fellowship, covering travel,
accommodations, living expenses and the program fee, is open to
mid-career journalists from any country in the world.

It is an opportunity for journalists working on the cultural
pages of newspapers or magazines, or those producing or editing
cultural programs on radio or television, according to Paddy
Coulter, the director of the Reuters Foundation Program at
Oxford. “It should appeal to legal correspondents and specialists
in international relations, but it is also wide open to other
generalists who have a research interest in these fields,” he
added.

The usual age at Oxford ranges from 28 to 45, with a minimum
requirement of five years’ experience in professional journalism.

Application forms can be obtained at the Reuters Foundation’s Web
site http://www.foundation.reuters.com/.

The Gerda Henkel Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation
based in Düsseldorf, Germany. The exclusive purpose of the
Foundation is to provide support to the Humanities - mainly the
historical sciences - at universities and research institutes.

Abstract: The objectives of the Research and Writing Grants

writers and scholars engaged in work on these issues. The
guidelines for this competition reflect specific themes that
complement the grantmaking strategies of the MacArthur
Foundation’s Program on Global Security and Sustainability. For
each of the annual Research and Writing Grants competitions
conducted in 2002, 2003, and 2004, the foundation will accept
only proposals relating to one of the following themes: Migration
and Refugees; and Technological Change and Global Security and
Sustainability. For each of the above themes, proposals that deal
with exclusively U.S.-based topics will not be considered, unless
the topic has significant international dimensions. Grants for
research and writing support creative work in many academic
disciplines and professions, as well as projects conducted
outside of traditional disciplinary and professional approaches.
Grants may be used by scholars in university and organizational
settings or by independent researchers working outside of
institutional contexts. Grants may not be used for research or
writing of the doctoral dissertation. Also ineligible for
consideration are projects that include requests to hold
workshops or conferences; to produce textbooks, manuals, films,
works of photojournalism, or works of fiction; to edit volumes;
or to develop curricular materials. Projects that include
development of an Internet site will be considered for funding
only if the Internet site is in addition to a substantial written
product intended for hard-copy publication. Studies that are
predominantly technical or clinical in nature will not be
eligible for funding.

The competition is open to individuals and two-person teams. In
addition, an institution may apply for support of projects to be
undertaken by an individual or two-person team. Applicants of
any age or citizenship may apply. Women, minorities, non-U.S.
citizens, and younger scholars are particularly encouraged to
apply.
