Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

WHO WERE THE FIRST RADIO COMMENTATORS IN PAKISTAN CRICKET SCENARIO? WHEN WAS THE RADIO COMMENTARY FIRST BROADCAST AND FROM WHERE?

Formal cricket commentary in English on Radio, was first broadcast live from National Stadium, Karachi in 1958-59 during the TEST match between Pakistan and West Indies. The commentator box was a sole large room on a tall minaret kind structure right in front of the pavillion also forming itself as the ‘side screen’ for batsmen. The first ever commentators were Omar Kuraishy and Maharaja Vizi ( A famous hunter of Tigers from India ) who were a little later.. joined by Jamshed Marker who rose to be a diplomat and held important assignments as Ambassador and Pakistan’s permanent rep. at the U.N. Omar himself held senior assignments at PIA and retired as a Director. He died last year

There was no Urdu commentary then. Just about fifteen minutes of the broadcast of day’s play proceedings by Badre Alam after the end of day’s game.

FAMOUS CRICKET PLAYERS OF FIFTIES AND THEIR PERKS AND ALLOWANCES THEN..?

Abdul Hafeez Kardar, Hanif Muhammad, Ajaz Butt, Blue Dreamy Eyed Fazal Mahmood, Nasimul Ghani, Khan Muhammad ( the then Shoaib Akhtar on speed not in character!), Rais Muhammad, Alimuddin, Wing Cdr.Imtiaz Ahmed (wicket-keeper), Saeed Ahmed, Wallis Mathias, Mahmood Hussain..the list goes on…, were the cricketers to reckon with. Their match fee was Rs.25/-. A public bus hired by the BCCP ( Board of Control of Cricket in Pakistan… now PCB ) use to pick up the players from their houses. Our current PM-Shaukat Aziz and myself were next door neighbors (for ten years) at the Garden Road Officers Colony right in front of Karachi’s famous Zoo ( then Gandhi Gardens ) where Hanif Mohammad and his four brothers also lived besides Alimuddin and Kardar and this colony had over 100 two storey blocks of four flats each. Me, Shaukat and our buddy Hafeez (now Country Head Asian Dev.Bank-Manila) , use to get into the bus which use to come to pick Hanif Bhai, Rais Bhai and Alimuddin and we use to be at the players enclosure, pavillion and all areas as free as a lark..! The ‘packed’ crowd at the NSK was around 2000 then…!!! at the TEST with West Indies where I saw Wes. Hall, Charlie Griffith, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Nurse, Garfield Sobers, Alexandar, Ramadhin and Gilchrist ( no relation to Adam the Kangaroo ). Wow.. what run up for that six footer Wesley Hall…half more than Shoaib’s..!

THE FAMOUS BALL THAT FAZAL BOWLED…?

It was Pakistan against Australia at the NSK. The season 1959-60.

Neil Harvey was flogging us left, right and forth. When he came to 96, Fazal took a new ( Jinnah Sports Manufactured ) ball and blew off the center wicket of Harvey ( current Harvey’s Dad ) for 96. What a scene it was…!!! we were literally dancing and running around Richie Benaud who stood there at the pavillion side watching us smilingly. I can never forget that smile. When I toured Australia as PCB’s Media Manager with our team in 1999, I met Benaud at Gabba-Brisbane and talked about it and he was quite mused and talked of his Dhaka and Lahore visits also.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

Wow! Did you tell Fazal what kinda ball he should deliver? Did he come and show you respect after he took the wicket?

p.s. Who is Omar Kuraishy? Is he the same as Omar Qureshi?

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

I like the question as much as I desire the AGE of the questioner? :)

When FAZAL bowled that bowled--I was 10 of age and back at the players enclosure of NSK... and except for handshake---my age and senses did not permit me to ask the question--the age and senses of the questioner--has desired a reply from me :)

OMAR KURAISHY or OMAR QURAISHI or OMER QURESHI.....it's a pity that a member of this forum speaks like so on someone who is no more in this world and has been an ICON on cricket in Pakistan and overseas!

On a more personal note--I would prefer serious CRICKET discussions and thoughts...henceforth...as my age doesn't permit me to have FUN at this forum.

YES---SHOWBIZ can have a tete-e-tete...as its SHOWBIZ and Artiste' are always in for fun!

No offence...little one!

Cheers from Raju UNCLE.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

Thanks for the info. I still remember the days when there was no Tv coverage of overseas games and we use to hear radio commentary. It is hard to accept now but it was really really fun. Not going to sleep for matches in Windies till 4am in the morning, getting up at 4-5am in the morning for matches in Australia or listeing to England games (texaco Trophy) in the afternoon.

Hasan Jalil was one of my favourites. However I also liked a very funny Urdu Commentator and his name was Muhammad Idrees. He was pretty hilaroius. Do you know if he is still doing cricket commentary?

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

No offence taken Uncle. Your participation in this forum is valued. I just couldn't resist pulling your leg.

By the way, fun has no age limit, but if you want to restrict it to Showbiz then give us a scoop on 'Intizar farmaiay'. We never got to see any proper matches played in Australia and Windies back in your days. All we saw was flowers and Intizar farmaiay.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

Thanks for sharing this info. Fazal saab was a legend in his own class. God bless his soul.

Fayz, you need a bouncer :p j/k

fkhan2, I think it was Mohammed Taqi who used to screem from the top of his throat, people on radio/tv would put their fingers in ears when their is a tense/suspense situation. Or was he in hockey? Several listeners got heart attacks because of his antics.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

My legs like my body..are heavy friend :)

Nevertheless--pun the sun!

Hasan Jalil is a great friend of mine. Now lives abroad mostly but finds time and sponsors to be seen and heard during ODIs and TESTS in Pakistan.

uch to the disdain...there are no archives of the clips of the TEST matches of yesteryears...played in Pakistan. The only...and perhaps the unique clip available with my first cousin is of Pak v/s England (Clin Cowdery & Tom Graveny & Ken Barrington days) of Dhaka-1962...which was filmed on a movie camera handled by swinging a lever...done by my Mamoon (I.A.Khan) who rose to become the Chairman BCCP (PCB now) in 1964 and also managed the team on England Tour. BBC Archives has a great collection which I myself saw at their library in 2005 nwhen I was in London on way back from a TV serial shoot at Scotland. Thanks to Asif Iqbal..my distant relative--for helping me out there.

I also saw the stffed bird at Lord's which got killed by the ball played by Majid's dad Jehangir Khan...at a TEST match.

Khush Rahein.............CRICKET khelien...

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

nahin yar smoothie, I have listened to this guy so much back in 80's and early 90's that I cant forget his name and style of commentary. He use to go haywire during commentary, exaggerating stuff. some of his master pieces, if i recall correctly are:

Qadir Aiiey bracewell ko gaind karanay aur Bracewell bold ho gie. Brace nay bold honay kay bad Qadir ko aisay dekha jaisay keh rhay hoon, "Qadir yeah tu nay kia kar diya"?

O'Donnell aiey Akram ko gaind karany, Akram ka zoordar shot aur akram nay O'donnell ko boundary kay bahir utha kar phaink dya (6 runs).

And there were several other. These comments sounded so funny because of his comical style

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

I think u are talking about Munir Hussain, Founder of Akhbar-e-watan too and he liked to be called as Baba-y-urdu commentry.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

bhaijan na mein Muhammad Taqi kee bat kar rha hoon na mein Munir hussain kee.
I am talking about Muhammad Idrees. however i don't know if he is still doing cricket commentary or not. I remember watching him in an interview on TV during last year Pak-India series.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

^ I know what Fahad is talking about. Mohammad Idrees, has a thick accent and most of the time he doesnt know what is he talking about.

I also like Hasan Jalil. He used to be my favourite.

Thanks for sharing sir, your insights and comments. Keep them coming. love reading them.

Re: Some CRICKETY facts by Raju

UNDOUBTEDLY----Munir bhai is an ICON on URDU Commentary (Cricket). In fact he laid the foundation of (running commentary) via Radio Pakistan. He is doing fine and is a key figure in Pakistan's cricket scenario. His daughter is my youngest daughter's best school days friend. They both are talented girls of Beaconhouse. Karachi Grammar & Indus Valley--now working by also having done wonderful programs on FM-89 till mid-last year as DJs.
