Solids and Milk for Baby

Hey Guys,

So baby is about 5.5 months old now and has started some solids…like he’s eating avocados, bananas, etc.

I am noticing that he’s not drinking as much milk as he used to.

Is that normal?

What is normal intake for milk for a 5.5 month that’s also eating mashed bananas at least once a day and how often should they be eating them?

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

I start my kids on 3 times within a week of starting solids aftrr inyroducing at 6 months.
Milk: if he is gaining weight feed on demand. Also consult with pead.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

@Reha
Hw do u give avocadó to ur kid, mashed or shake. And wt quantity?
I hv heard its very gud for kid.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

Avocado is soft to begin with…so I peel it, take out the seed and just mash it up. Make sure its ripe and that’s all.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

U give whole at one time or half?

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

Depends...I might give him half if he's cooperating. Otherwise I give him half avo with some banana mashed in too since its sweet.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

thanx a lot dear for all replies.
Plz do update here whn u start anyother thng.
Easier for me. Plz
Thanx again.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

Consult with your paed but at this point, he should be feeding as many times as he waw before you started solids. That's because at this age a babies main source of nutrition is still milk, solids are more of an activity...a game really to get them used to different flavors and textures.

Maybe give him solids half an hr or 45 minutes after his last feed...so he intakes substantial amount at his next feeding as well...

Off course as he grows older and starts eating more, the amount of milk needed will reduce...

And oh, initially solids are only about twice a day at most... Maybe with an 8 hr gap between the two solids eating session
But every baby is different... Follow your child's cues...he knows when he's hungry and when he's full

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

I'll give an example...yesterday he had 1/2 avocado with some banana mashed in at about noon. Then he had milk at 2-2.5 hour intervals until evening. Then around 6ish we had another 1/2 avocado with banana mashed in which he ate without issues. Its not like he's just tasting it...he eats.

I am wondering if I should reduce solids and go back to milk for now or just keep going with this routine?

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

My doc was pretty firm that i should be feeding at least 6-8 times a day on top of the two solids session... Obviously the milk intake started to reduce as she grew older...
There were days when mine wouldn't eat anything or eat less (teething.. Generally cranky..didn't like whatever i introduced that day :-p) but i didn't worry because the milk intake was pretty consistent.

I think if this routine is working then stick with it..as long as the weight and height gain is satisfactory.
What does your paed says?

By the way... As soon as you can start introducing baby food versions of whatever you eat...easier in the long run
And maybe look into BLW as well....i have for the most part stuck to traditional weaning (mashed, pureed food.. Slow gradual transition) but i have friends who tried Blw and rave about it all the time.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

I started with just a spoon or two of solids at 5 months - avocados, bananas, pureed carrots, sweet potato, applesauce. Then introduced rice+lentils. She was drinking about the same amount of milk because her solid intake was still not that much. By 7 months she was having a small bowl of solids twice a day and that's when she started dropping milk feeds. Now at 10 mos she has 3-4 meals, and about 700 ml of milk in the day.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

@Reha
3-4 8oz bottles.
general guide is 150 cc/kg in 24 hrs...

so examle my 6 mo is 7.3 kg
150cc x 7.3kg = 1090ml of milk in 24 hrs
1090 ml = 37 oz
37 oz /8oz = approx 4.5 8oz bottles of milk.

in reality she takes slightly less ... 4 bottles ...

above is just a general guideline. I feed on demand. Ive been feeding her solids since she was 4 mo. cereal, fruits veggis ... three times per day ... about 2 oz each time. sometimes 4 if she seems really hungry.

i wouldn't worry about this as long as your baby is gaining and maintaining weight appropriately.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

What is BLW?

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

My baby went off milk and started wanted what were were eating at around 4 months. He completely refused to bf, and this wasn't a strike of a few days but weeks of trying literally everything suggested to get him interested in bfing again. He just wasn't into milk in general, he wanted to eat whenever and whatever anyone was eating in front of him.
My doc said it happens and even happened with one of her own children at 3 months so I should just let it go and give him what he wants. By 5.5 months he was eating breakfast, lunch (2 course), afternoon snack and dinner (2 course), he would only take milk when he wanted to sleep during the day and would drink about 240ml overnight (in small bursts whilst asleep). His overall milk intake had reduce a lot but he knew and still knows what he does and doesn't want. For example, he would close his mouth tightly and move his head to the side if you bought the milk bottle towards him. However, if we offer him water (he drinks a beaker full a day), he's all ready with an open mouth... something he has been doing since about 4 months old (at that time water was in a bottle too).

"solids are more of an activity...a game really to get them used to different flavors and textures." <- I know this is what all the exclusive bfing and baby led weaning literature says but I find it hard to believe that's universally true after my experience. My kid was and is hungry for real food all the time and loves eating. He's 7.5 months now and will eat pretty much anything that we feel is safe for him to eat. He gets super cranky if his meal-time gets late but won't accept milk even when he's really hungry. He's not had any problems with weight gain at any point and is following his percentile curve.

Personally, unless you strictly want to follow the baby led weaning (BLW) way, I would start introducing him mashed up and baby safe versions of your food rather than just fruit. My little one eats a fair bit of fruit but only as a dessert or snack. One idea at this age is mashed veg mixed with yakhni.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

He will be 6 months on the 6th of July.

Before solids, he was drinking 6 oz of milk every 2-3 hours.

After introducing food, its now between 4.5-5 oz of milk every 2-3 hours with of course one feeding consisting of food. We are eating twice a day and mainly its avocado mashed with another fruit.

He seems on be on trend for height, weight, etc. I just want to make sure I am not delaying him or doing something late or early here.

I just realized I might sound a bit paranoid...maybe I am.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

I think I'll try veggies with yakhni...he hates veggies so far though

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

I don't think it's paranoia, it's incredibly difficult to know what is best to do. I'd say let your little guy lead the way and don't stress too much, if he's eating now and is enjoying eating then just mix it up as much as you can. I try not to give the same thing more than once in a day, so if I give banana at one meal, it will be a different fruit next time.

To be honest, I have my mum and was happy to take her suggestions on board... like by 5 months he was having egg yolk mixed in with mashed veg or rice as well. Also, in addition as his own food, if you are eating something that he can eat, let him have a taste. Eating plough? Squish some rice in your fingers and let him eat from your hands... this is how I initially introduced a lot of foods. He would sit on my lap at meal times and if there was anything on my plate that I could give him, I'd let him eat a little.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

Oh, and I always offer milk first. If he's fussing but refusing milk it's generally coz he wants to eat lol.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

^ Did you give him cooked or runny yolk? Docs here are so against giving eggs.

Re: Solids and Milk for Baby

Half runny.

Yea, I didn’t even know there was an issue until someone mentioned it on GS but apparently egg yolk is fine and the latest guidelines in general regarding commonly allergic foods is to try to introduce them before 12 months.
