Solid Colours vs Checks for Dress Shirts

I have always preferred solids, checks for me are for casuals. However, over time I have become bored with all the solids and wonder if I can pull off a professional look with checks.

Do you wear checks with formal/office/business attire?

Re: Solid Colours vs Checks for Dress Shirts

Well, the checkers shirts are in now a days, specially if you wear a tight bottom jeans (red, khaki or any weird color, ankle high) + a blazer. I normally like checkers shirts but with this new fashion trending in, its just getting easier for me.

I normally don’t dress up that formally for my day to day job because all i do is sit at the desk and code .. somedays i just go to office in trouser and shirt. But if i have to be in some party or something, I wear whats trending and now a days its checkers.

P.S:
I hope you are asking from guy’s perspective.

You may not be asking for a woman’s opinion, but given I’m surrounded by professionally-attired men at work in a traditionally conservative work environment, I’ll add my two cents

Button down shirts can be checkered, striped, textured or coloured - all are options if you want to mix things up and not stay with boring blue or white shirts. And if you wear the check/stripes/colours/textures the right way - it doesn’t even look metrosexual. Especially when worn with business suits - it’s all about the suit colour/texture and the tie. You do have to be careful about checkered patterns - there are some that do look casual and even when paired with a suit, still make the wearer look like a professor. But short answer - checks/stripes/textured shirts can be worn with business suits and look professional.

The only thing men should not wear are patterned (abstract/floral patterned shirts). To this day I remember a former manager wearing a blue shirt with a cream pattern and EVERYONE at work asked him whether he had borrowed his wife’s blouse. Needless to say, he never wore that again

MQ, I can’t wear jeans at work, thats a big no no, there is a minority that do wear dark jeans at my workplace but in general its avoided. I sometimes do wear khakis with striped but not that often, I usually on my weekend or evening rounds. I prefer checked with jeans and rarely wear solids with jeans but that of course not at work.

Upton now the only check i am wearing are micro check patterns and not the bold checks. Suits are not really “in” at my place. Though I do like to wear, I usually remove jacked in office/lounge and wear white coat or nothing and after the rounds wear jacket.

Re: Solid Colours vs Checks for Dress Shirts

Do you wear a tie or wear the shirt open collar? And for ideas, go to Pinterest - there are tons and tons of pictures showing you how to pair trousers with striped/checked/textured shirts, with or without a tie and/or suit jacket.
