Sun and Moon appears the same size in the sky, because sun is about 400 times larger than moon and also about 400 times father than moon from earth. That is the reason why moon seems to cover the sun completely, during a total eclipse.

the distance between the moon and earth isn’t constant - sometimes when the eclipse happens while moon is at the farther end, the entire moon’s shadow can fit inside the visible sun.
and when the moon is at the nearer side, it covers the sun more or less completely.
I don't blame previous civilizations to have believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe - it certainly appears that things go on for our purpose here on Earth - despite us being able to know what is actually happening. One can't help view the "world" as one views a "show" ...
